I'm considering moving to somewhere in E. Asia to teach english, and Japan and S. Korea are both at the top of the list. The thing is, while I'd rather live in Japan (specifically, Tokyo or Osaka etc), it's supposedly much easier to get a teaching job in a major city in S. Korea than it is in Japan, plus the pay can be better.

So, does anyone know much about the two places? What it's like living in Seoul versus a major city in Japan? Or Seoul versus living in a more rural area of japan? What's life like in Seoul as far as stuff to do, nightlife, culture, people, the girls, etc? I've heard it can be fun but doesn't compare to Japan?

Anybody here have any input on this?

Search the web. Plenty on the web about those places. Personally, I would avoid the two countries like the plague.

My friend teaches English in Seoul. He makes $33,000 a year which is a lot based on what you can save. You can make more in Seoul and the club areas like hondae are pretty happening. Japan is obviously even more fun but you will be broke since the pay is ok but costs are through the roof.

Your gonna need some knowledge of their language as well, it'll be hard to teach without it o_O

you're going there for pvssy huh? :)
Haha. I consider it a perk, I admit, but I'm mainly looking for a drastically different life experience.

and thanks fuzz, you seem to know your shyt. I guess I know more about japan than S.Korea so I'm more interested in learning about Korea. Japan sounds like a lot of fun and I'd kinda feel like I'm settling if I end in S.Korea instead. Is it really fun in Seoul?

Also, do you mean teaching english nets you so-and-so a month in Korea and Japan? I was under the impression you get paid more in Korea. How much did you make in each?

And what's it like teaching/working for a school in Korea compared to Japan?

Well i wouldn't be doing this if it were "for the money", I know there's not a lot of money involved. Although someone who taught in korea did tell me they were able to save up $20k CAD even while having a lot of fun. I just want to do it for a cool, different experience, and fvcking foreign girls would be a part of that. :)

oh and I have a degree.

thanks for the links.

btw, what is the weather typically like in seoul?

Tokyo is probably the most English / American friendly city. Most people know English and the public education is making it mandatory to learn English. Most of the things are in both Japanese and English. You will find plenty of American stuff, so you won't really feel cut off. Star bucks, MacD and BK are pretty much every where. The only difference is that they make the burgers much nicer. I wouldn't want to live in the rural areas in Japan though a lot of WWII veterans live there as farmers and you're more likely to meet racists. There's not much going outside the city anyways, if you want to live in Japan make sure you live in TOKYO!

Yeah well, that's the problem, it's apparently a ***** to get a teaching job in a place like Tokyo or Osaka, and if it's so expensive to live there I don't know how worth it it would be.

The Japanese do everything with care...they take pride in everything they do. Thats why everything there is so much better, even the customer service is 10 times better than the sh!tty service you get in America....

You should take economics, it's called purchasing power parity. Obviously your wages will be adjusted so you can live in the city. How do you think all the other Japanese teachers live in the city? I think it would be wise to go there now when American teachers are in demand, once English becomes a second language there will be so many teachers around it'll be impossible to make it. I dunno who came up with this idea that Tokyo is expensive. It's like New York, it depends on the location. If you really wanted to live there you could do two jobs, one during the day 8-5 and then a part-time during the night life. I did some bar tending and bouncer work, it's really fun. Oh yea most Japanese girls are high quality, they cook, clean and quiet. That's probably the biggest reason for you to go. If you decide not to go to Japan, then make China your second choice.

Tokyo IS expensive. I spent more there than I did when I was living in NYC, easily. Seoul too.

It's manageable if you don't go out much, but just getting around in Yapan can rock your budget depending on where you are.

Getting around Tokyo is easy, just get a good bike. They have bike trails so it's safe and it's a great way to keep in shape. Also if you get monthly pass for the public bus, it's dirt cheap. The only expensive thing are taxis which start at around 7 bucks and trains. Seriously everything you need is in like a 1 mile radius, unlike U.S. where everything needs to be spaced out.

There are plenty of cities in the US where everything you need within walking distance, and there are plenty of places in Japan that are spread out. Your constant anti-US pot shots are inaccurate and retarded.

I can walk to anything I might need right now, and I'm living in America.

Really? No sh*t every city has everything it needs in a walking distance. Every god damn city in the world has everything in walking distance. Wait till you get outside of the city in America. The public transportation is absolute sh*t and you need a car to get around. At least in Japan you can use public transportation and don't need to own a freaking car to travel around outside the city. You're the one talking out of your ass city boy.

If I didn't have anything to criticize about the United States I would shut up. As an American I want these stupid sh*t fixed instead of the politicians and government wasting money on useless cr*p. Also if you really a true American would respected the real values of what the country stood for you would embrace criticism as freedom of speech. Just because I criticize America doesn't mean I'm an unpatriotic terrorist like what republicans think in this country.
