Is the school prom just the marriage industrial complex's feeder system?

I remember the first formal I went to (7th grade) we didn't have the money to buy me a blazer or coat; so I got my pictures taken with a white shirt, pants and a tie, needless to say I looked like a total dweeb. Having been to the low end of the scale, and seeing $1k is the high end of the scale, as usual I see myself right in the middle.

In my small town, the three or four nice restaurants would have a special "prom menu" on that night, which was basically their same food for double the price, because every kid was supposed to take his date out to dinner. And they were always full. I knew prom was a scam even back then. My prom dinner was the steaks my date's dad cooked us, which we ate in her back yard.

Huh. I only spent about $50 total (1999).

What a waste of money.

What happens, IN HER MIND, is that she comes to see you as WORTHLESS simply because she hasn't had to INVEST anything in you in order to get you or to keep you.

You were an interesting diversion while she had nothing else to do. But now that someone a little more valuable has come along, someone who expects her to treat him very well, she'll have no problem at all dropping you or demoting you to lowly "friendship" status.

So very true. It's like a mini-wedding.

Mine was quite expensive too, even in 1994.

After five rejections, I finally got this blonde to go with me. Here were the costs...

$600 for limo

$110 for tuxedo

$40 for flowers

$80 for two tickets

My best "friend" number closed my date right in front of me at the table.

She danced with him most of the night and told me "Thank you for a nice evening" when the limo dropped her off.

When I finally lost my virginity ten years later (with a 26 yo), the front desk guy told me the hotel was busy that night because it was prom night. Better late than never lol.

your story highlights a simple fact that most men simply refuse to understand.

FIND OUT IF THE GIRL ACTUALLY LIKES YOU...BEFORE PROCEEDING ON ANY ACTIVITY.

as men we assume that if a girl accepts a date, dinner, prom, or even marriage..the woman must feel some love for us right?

WRONG.

women have agendas and checklists and they will meet those agendas simply to compete with their gaggle of fattie friends. The girl accepting your prom date or even marriage proposal might just be doing so because all other options have RUN OUT FOR HER.

but that doesn't mean she actually cares about you.

..actually more than likely she HATES YOU. why? As much as women want to fulfill their agendas they resent/hate the men who don't fall at least 3 notches above her....even the plain jane 6 wants a 10...if you are an 8 you still may be BELOW HER IN HER DISTORTED EYES...fvcked up but true.

yes a 6 girls thinks she DESERVES A 10....men should have slapped the sh!t out of biatches like this years ago..but the female entitlement cancer has spread....and proms are the first formal barrage in a man's enslavement in the social landscape of the western world circa 2012.

How did you do that? The Tux rental alone costed more than that in the late 90's.

Peace and Quiet

If you currently have too many women chasing you, calling you, harassing you, knocking on your door at 2 o'clock in the morning... then I have the simple solution for you.

Just read my free ebook 22 Rules for Massive Success With Women and do the opposite of what I recommend.

This will quickly drive all women away from you.

And you will be able to relax and to live your life in peace and quiet.

Didn't rent a tux. Already had one...

Anyway, even if I had to rent one, it wouldn't have cost more than maybe $125.

But nobody I grew up with spent much on prom anyway.

It's pretty sad that guys feel they need to blow more than a grand to rent limos and all that. I'm guessing it also depends on where you live.

Some interesting responses here.

Now I have the experience of going to an all-male Catholic high school in a big enough city with a whole league of Catholic schools. Typically the proms for the other all-male Catholic high schools were on different days, so prom dates could be polyandrous, so getting a date was fairly easy, even for an AFC, since there was always someone whose girlfriend had a bunch of friends that would be available (they have have gone to other school's proms, but since this school didn't have much competition, they would be available.)

However, I'm figuring that the situation must be different at coed schools, as most folks only socialize with other students at that school. And in smaller towns, in which there is only the one high school, that school is pretty much it. With today's meme of hypergamy, I'd bet that the women would try very hard at getting the top level male - even asking him to the prom! Perhaps even there are some women that agree to share a date polygynously! But for those women who are not aggressive (and victorious) in snatching the top level male, I'm figuring that their standards take a big dive as the prom night approaches and they don't want to be left dateless, with an amazing hunting attitude to try and snag any semi-decent male that somehow is still available. Probably a lot like the way that women hitting their biological clock act! LOL!

I do like the comparison of prom chicks as bridezillas in the making. It's just an ever growing entitlement/princess mentality of females in western society.

I told my sons to ask her our a couple months before the prom...for a date. IF she didn't want to date you, no sense spending bucks on the prom on her"day"

yeah only dorks actually take it that seriously

when i was in high school. you either just rented a car or drove your parents car. my mom drove a pretty new mercedes at the time and had i went i would have just taken her car and been done with it. no one actually rents limos for prom

How many of you actually closed the deal on prom night?
Well, I got the third base to be honest. It was about as far as me and my high school girlfriend ever went. The best part? I got her home early from prom, so we went to sit in the living room, her dad was in the next room sleeping whilst I was getting a HJ. Sadly I didn't didn't go all the way until about two years later with the neighborhood bike.. So lame.

On the plus side, she didn't spend a lot on her dress, my dad let me use the nice car instead of my beater to drive us and we had dinner at her house. We were practical people.

I forgot about this thread and meant to reply sooner.

I agree with everything Burroughs said.

The other posters were spot on about "entitlement, princess, and bridezilla" stuff.

I didn't even bother going. I was too preoccupied playing Resident Evil 1.

Men frequently err by talking too much. They often monopolize conversations, droning on and on about topics that bore women to tears. They think they're impressing the women when, in reality, they're depressing the women.
