There's a reason online dating was invented in the 1990s. In-person approaching is difficult.

Match.com launched in 1995 and Yahoo! Personals launched around that same time. There were some other dating sites that launched in the 1990s. The next most significant dating site launches were Plenty of Fish in 2003 and OkCupid in 2004.

In 2005, plenty of guys were using websites like the ones I mentioned above to attempt to get laid or find relationships, but it was a smaller group than 2010-2011 or post 2012 (when Tinder launched). In 2005, online dating had become de-stigmatized but wasn't as popular as in-person methods. Realize that in 2005, the majority of singles were still Gen X'ers who had better social skills than the next generation Millennials. Gen X didn't grow up as much with technology as Millennials. The borderline years of Gen X and Gen Y/Millennial is about when the tides of technology start to turn. In 2005, the oldest Millennials were 23. Millennials were either in the isolated confines of college dating scenes or hadn't even turned 18 yet. However, some Millennials were using MySpace to get dates in 2005 or some were using Facebook to do that. In 2005, Facebook was still a college-only social network that was still getting adopted at various colleges.

Even in 2005-06, there was a surplus of men on dating websites trying to get vagina. The surpluses of men have gotten worse with the apps. Even in 2010-11, most women were having their inboxes flooded on OkCupid and PlentyofFish by horny, thirsty men.

@Zimbabwe is correct that online dating is hundreds of men competing for women and a good portion of those women are leftover women. Even post 2012, the best women find boyfriends through means other than swipe apps.

I don't think in-person approaching is overrated. Yes, it stinks and is unpleasant but it is overall a better alternative than swiping and texting. The ideal mechanism would be to set up a social circle capable of producing dates and relationships.

Most people do better IRL cold approaching than OLD. I am not one of those people. Maybe Im lucky, maybe location has to do with it like someone told me in another post, maybe Ive been trhough so much trial and error tha eventually I found what works for me.

Is it overrated? Yeah. Is it better than OLD? 100%.
