Technical degrees from esteemed places like Georgia Tech have not been enough to keep me employed. I guess all the dinosaurs at my previous jobs were right when they said that once an engineer hits 40, he is unemployable.

I've just gone through a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, and it seems that my worth in the labor marketplace is to be some schlub at Wal-Mart.

I got sick of job hunting. I decided to MAKE MY OWN JOB. I taught myself how to design websites, how to market, sell and operate a business in 8 months. Now Im no longer frustrated about trying to find work and I don't have to deal with miserable bosses or managers.

Did I mention I am not educated and I don't have any degrees ?

I'm making more and more money every month and soon (hopefully with some luck) I wont even notice that we are going through an economic collapse.

Don't depend on other people to give you a job and don't waste your intelligence at a job you don't enjoy doing.

Figure out what makes you happy and find a way to build a company around your passion.

Hey...collapse is a very strong word...don't throw it around unless you want it to happen.

How do you market your services, btw?

England, baby!
i know a lot of people i graduated with last year still havent really got a "proper" job, teyve either done filler sutff such as some freelancing, or tried to start their own thing up in desperation, whist a few others (inlcuding me) have done a postgrad degree to wait out the bad times as such

most people who have full time job, have kinda crappy ones...and so are overskilled

Kingsam, isn't that kind of risky, placing yourself in MORE debt....hoping that things will improve ??

Exceptionally strong social skills, I get people to like me in a short amount of time and then I explain what my services are. After I explain what I do and how I my services can benefit my potential client I go for the close.

Its no different than hunting for girls at a club, talking to them and asking for some kind of close, be it a number close or an F close.

What positions are you applying for? If you are applying for senior level positions, that might be a bit under your capabilities. Engineers fit a niche based on experience, so companies looking to fill a position should hire someone with the right talent set. As someone who just started looking, I guess I can't comment if there aren't any jobs out there...but the few places I have looked have had anything from an associate engineer all the way to engineering directors.

which specialty are you?

have you thought about moving? If a man is single and not tied down to a family there really is no reason not to go where the jobs are.

I just don't think I could stay 6 months to a year unemployed like some people do. There comes a point where one should pack up their bags and go somewhere else.

Tell her a little about yourself, but not too much. Maintain some mystery. Give her something to think about and wonder about when she's at home.

Thing is; you're not in recession, you're in controlled recession. In other word, everything is socially engineered. 28%+ employment in your country.

All created for a purpose.
Wow... but no.

The recession in America happened because of that economic bubble that burst. You can only prop up the system with funny money for so long. Everyone expect the economy to "grow" meanwhile everything is outsourced.

Damn, I caught this thread a little late, but MatureDJ, I certainly feel for ya as I filed chapter 7 just the other day and included my house which I have owned for 12 years. I lost 50k on the house last year too. I definitely understand your miseries as I am going through them just like you. TIMES are freaking tough and it along with an injury on the job has put a damper on my social/ dating life.

Keep your head up as I try and do the same!

What type of engineer are you and how many years do you have? Seems the opposite is going on with me.

You really have to be hungry in this type of climate to get work or get ahead. Education alone won't cut it. Desire alone won't cut it. You had better go out with both and then some if you want to make it in the shark tank of a job market we're all faced with these days.

Me, I've always been hungry. But I'm down right ruthless these days about my work and it's paying off. I'm not only employed, but advancing. I'm in line for three positions in Nevada...the un employment capitol of the nation.

It doesn't matter how good-looking you are, how romantic you are, how funny you are... or anything else. If she doesn't have something INVESTED in you and the relationship, preferably quite a LOT invested, she'll dump you, without even the slightest hesitation, as soon as someone a little more "interesting" comes along.
