Is 150 hp enough for a car

I test drove the 08 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution today and I liked everything about it except that its only a 150 horsepower engine. Its a 2.0 Mivec? Is that near enough power for a car in your opinion?

No it must have at least 5,000 hp. 10,000 with the after burner.

Seriously though, i consider anything over 200 to be fast.
150 would be just enough to get by. Don't expect great acceleration though.

The thing that irritates me with 4 bangers is they make a lot of noise and the acceleration is PAINFULLY slow.
A mom in her V6 camry or accord will leave you in the dust without even braking a sweat. :D
Great on fuel consumption though. Depends what you're going for.

Wait for the evo to come out if you want more power.

You plan on racing someone? If so, definitely get a bigger engine.

If you just plan to drive your car for normal purposes though, that's plenty.

Women don't know or care how big your car's engine is.

I did some research and the new Camrys and Accords actually have 140-160 hp. I'm just suprised for the low horses because my 97 Buick has 200 hp.

Yea, that's 268 at the crank. Around 220 at the wheels, provided it has a manual, otherwise 200 at the wheels if automatic, otherwise less than 200 if it's CVT.

You looking at 110 horses at the wheels with mitsu.

Search eBay for "svt countour", otherwise you might be interesting in Dodge Neon, Ford Focus. Those have more torque, meaning faster.

All this power on these cars is unusable on the street, because torque is high on top. Meaning you need to rev high. In normal driving, you'd be driving a normal car with no kick to it, borning as a coffin. Kind of like my mustang in 5th at 30 mph.

You're a bloody idiot. For several reasons:

1) the '08 EVO has 300 hp
2) The '08 EVo doesn't come out til March of next year
3) You test drove a Lancer, not a Lancer EVO
4) I have an '08 EVO on order so i know what the f#ck i'm talking about

I drive vehicles with 98 HP and weigh 3 tons, immensely large and are pigs on gas.

Still moves with traffic if you know how to drive it.

Yea, even the old ones had about 200, he was looking at the 4 cylinder models not V6.
Not that i'm advising anyone to buy a camry, lol, but when you step on the gas in the V6 it's a whole different experience. You hear the low pitched purr of the engine and it just goes, effortlessly. No whining and screaming like with the 4 cylinder.

my old honda accord was 135hp and I got like 27-30 mpg....35 when I took long trips

my new mazda6 has a V6, 220hp....i get like 20-22mpg.....sucks....except when I'm driving uphill passing people. I like the power and passing power.

but for being a hp freak who wants to race everyone? screw that. I'm happy with what i've got.

My opinion is 95% of people buy far more engine than they need. At almost every single stoplight, people take 2-3 seconds at least just to go, then they mozey on up to speed like they hardly have any engine at all. Yet these are people in powerful cars and trucks doing this!

My small car has just over 100hp (its new) and I weave around most people. Cars with small engines are fun to drive because you can use most of the powerband without driving too fast/being recklass.

It doesn't matter how good-looking you are, how romantic you are, how funny you are... or anything else. If she doesn't have something INVESTED in you and the relationship, preferably quite a LOT invested, she'll dump you, without even the slightest hesitation, as soon as someone a little more "interesting" comes along.

It's funny because most of my friends call people that bought Evo's idiots.

Sorry, but I have to agree with azanon. What the hell do you guys need so much power for? The vast majority of people with big engines don't use them.

Now don't get me wrong, I like a nice sports car as much as the next guy, but there's a difference between that, and just getting a v6/v8 in your 'get groceries and go to work' car, because all that does is burn gas.

No wonder America guzzles so much gas, you have people believing that you should never go below 6 cylinders. In most of the world, 4 cylinders is plenty.

It's funny because the American car companies are getting their asses handed to them year after year, and their brilliant strategy now is to continue doing what most of the world has moved away from years ago, ie big, useless muscle.

So to answer the original question, it depends. My car is 140hp, and it does just fine for everything I've ever needed. If you are planning on racing, or have something to compensate for, then get more. Otherwise, 150hp is plenty.

to each his own i guess. But look at the poster that posted this original respect.

Anyway, some people might think buying a $30,000 car that can get to 60mph in 4.4 seconds a bargain, others will look at its ugly apperance and say no way.

I, on the other hand, have always wanted a very fast car, but don't yet have the $ to go buy higher end cars. I want my paddle shifters, and my speed. If i get sick of it quickly, then good, I learned my lesson and will never buy such a fast car once.

You only live once.
