I just saw this, and I have to say it is a very good movie. Very thought-provoking.

It's based on a true story of a recent college graduate who basically throws away all of his money, runs away from society, and goes on an adventure; meeting a cast of interesting people, and going through intense experiences that shows that happiness comes in many different forms.

I loved it.

I can relate to chris quite abit, as far as being an idealist, and with my deep-seated desire to ditch society as a whole.

p.s. the book is even better(though the movie is a good rendition).

In a way, it is similar to fight club.

I am in college right now and let me tell you, the psych majors and all the bullsh1t majors that people are in give them one thing when they leave college: A PIECE OF PAPER.

Science/math/econ/engineering/etc majors it's a different story, but these people who have to read like 20 pages a day b1tch and complain about it like broken foot or something. They party and go to class and act all ****y and "intellectual." But I call them out in discussion like:

"uh did you even read the book? the author said the opposite of what you just said."
"um well what I meant was, blah blah"
"ok well the first time you definitely said the opposite of what you just said."
"....ok"

I do agree that had I not gone to college, I would be smarter than a lot of the people who graduated. It's frustrating to see these chumps just throw their lives away when I know so many people who would use this opportunity to learn as much as they can. And these fvckers throw their tuition and time away.

I also hate these bullsh1t movies about people who throw away their lives to go "find themselves." That pretty much means you were a fvcking failure at life. Do not romanticise the idea of being a homeless person. This feel good bullsh1t about happiness....yeah right

Life is one big competition. If people want to "be happy" and go soul-searching they can do that, while I work hard, retire early, and reap the rewards.

Rewards like Social Security? No wait, it probably won't exist by the time you retire.

Man...learn to think out outside the box...i was mad too after i seen the part in the movie where he burnt his money and donated his savings...i also thought he was an idiot...

then i began to realize what he was thinking...we as human beings have been brainwashed by the world. We are programmed to think we need money to survive and materialistic things to make people envy us and make ourselves 'happy'...yet we are ignorant to the fact that there other things in the world besides driving in that $60,000 Mercedes and drinking fine Champagne at parties, Other things on this earth like its beautiful mountains, its continuously flowing rivers, and forests that are home to other beautiful living creatures. I think thats what Chris really wanted, to escape our programmed society and live outside of the Matrix. - Ken

Funny even on this website, there's still plenty of people who don't 'get it'.

Sounds like a good movie.

There's nothing wrong with doing what that guy did as long as it makes the person doing it happy and doesn't hurt anyone else.

As for another poster...

Life is a competition to him but its not to other people.

For some its about survival, for others its about following the latest trends.

Basically the meaning of life is up to the individual.

I saw the movie. It was good, but I would say that the book was better. If you like to read, I'd suggest the book. If you are against reading, see the movie.

^^^Some people are not in it for the "end surprise" only. They are in it for insight and perspective, experience, and so on.

Consider movies where you already know the ending, be it cuz its history or they simply start from the end. It becomes something more than "the surprise ending"...

This may be a hard concept to grasp.

I would say there is a big point. The book provides many insights that the movie does not.

Have you you ever went to see any of the Spiderman/ Supeman movies? I think it is a pretty safe bet you know he lives in the end, i.e. you know the ending in advance. I would venture the majority of people that have seen Into the Wild know the ending either via reading the book or magazine articles that came out about it or by reading some of the movie reviews that mentioned that fact in it.

of course you know he lives at the end...but thats example...what im saying is i already know the basics of the story already and got a visual of what happened...now no point in reading the book cuz now all im going to think about is the visuals in the movie..
