After taking a couple human kinetics classes and studying body type, weight, BMI etc. I have realized that your overall bone structure is HUGE when it comes to looking buff.

I have very small wrists and overall a thin stature. It makes it VERY tough to put on weight that people will be able to notice with your shirt on. I see these big boned guys who go to the gym and they look extremely masculine and muscular...then I look at me and it's not even close. While I'm still quite defined, I simply don't have the frame to put on a large deal of muscle. What's funny is that a lot of these large hulking guys can barely lift more than me. I see them lifting similar or only slightly higher weights but they look much bigger. Not necessarily as defined, but even if they were wearing a shirt everyone would be able to tell they lift weights. Me on the other hand, everyone thinks I'm still skinny - and they're right. Unless I have my shirt off or have a sleeveless T-shirt on you wouldn't notice any muscle at all.

I guess I am just feeling kinda like all of this weight lifting isn't doing much good. It seems like when I am lifting weights it is a battle just to look NON SKINNY as opposed to appearing muscular/masculine. I guess I have to keep it up otherwise I will look overly skinny...

I'm 5'9'' 135 pounds, 10% Body Fat, maybe I could stand to gain a few pounds? Before I started lifting 6 months ago, i was only 125. Not great gains, but atleast it's progress. Should I just continue to keep lifting and slowly gaining muscle and hope for the best? Or would putting on 5-10 pounds of fat along with the added muscle gain a good strategy?

I truly think hard work push-ups, non stop push-ups morning and night will help you gained faster, your chest and your upper body in general thats if you eat right with suppliments.

with gyms you can go for lower body work-outs,but when i had all the equipments and stuff even when i was at the gym for 2 months i couldnt gain much weight or mass than when i did push-ups.

im not really that muscular either (no infact im very muscular but i havnt got the bulk yet im kinda like brad pitt in fight club)but im very well defined and ripped. with whey protein to help you with the push-ups you'll gained a little bulk but it has to be push-ups morning and evening 800 or more each.

for now im not interested in the gym. unless i really see a benefit in gyms or when im ready to do lower body workouts ill hit the gyms. im a slim dude too. but people still notice if i get a lil bit bigger mainly by looking at my chest and its all down to push-ups and arm workouts.

besides i find pumping iron too stressfull and painfull.

bull****. overall size is built with squats, deadlifts, etc. not with push ups and curls. http://www.sosuave.net/forum/showthread.php?t=78783

you could listen to skeeloo's excuse making, or get in the gym, eat enough, and get bigger. would you take mass building advice from somebody who admits they're still as skinny as ever, or ask big guys like a-unit & WBA how they got bigger?

i never said i was that skinny, i gave an example that i now got the body size pitt had in fight club(thats the only popular comparison i can give now) in just 2-3months. more of my routine and id be bigger than that. besides pitt wasnt skinny in fight club.

Am I the only one here who struggles to pound out 30 reps in a row?

I MIGHT...MIGHT be able to push out 100 in one sitting(4-5 sets), but I'd be tooled after that.

Are you going chin-to-ground, keeping your back straight, and on your toes?

Dude, if you have Fight Club Brad Pitt's size, YOU ARE skinny. Maybe really ripped and even good-looking for most people, but still skinny. Just the fact that you can see his muscles doesn't mean he's muscular: it does mean that there is only a really small layer of fat covering them.
And growing by pushups alone? That could work for a couple of months, then you won't grow any bigger if you don't eat big and you don't lift weights. That's basic science, nothing spectacular.

For green69: you are 5'9 and 135, how can you complain that you look skinnier than big-boned guys? Those folks probably weigh AT LEAST 50 lbs more than you, that's why they look bigger than you. When I started lifting, I would weigh even less than you (I'm 5'9 too) and I accepted the fact that I was skinny because I weighed small, not because my wrists were small or who-knows-what other bullshìt.

And your reasoning is stupid too (no offence to you): think about male strippers, that is guys who are paid to look their best. They all are muscular but small-boned. Why? In order to look weak? I don't think so. That's because if you are big-boned and muscular you will look like a Hulk, if you are small-boned and muscular you will look like a hunk.

You sound like me. This is exactly what I've been trying to tell people. If you have the wrong bone structure, you have to work twice as hard, for half the results. Its not fair, but thats the way it is.

I have a combination body frame which most people do.

My upper body before I started back lifting is bigger than my lower as my legs were smaller or my thigh area.

Now my body is in line as I stuck with Deadlifts, Squats, Clean & Press, Bend over Rows etc., and a few other compound exercises make sure you eat right and rest and you'll get there in time.

I believe without a doubt if it weren't for Push Ups with Push up bars I wouldn't be as strong as I am now and to think I had to start with the girly push ups a few years ago to get where I am now with the Push up bars and doing them with weights. If their good enough for combat training and the military they'd good enough for me.

Lifting weights isn't for the faint of heart it take courage and determination to want to change what you don't like about yourself.

Dude, I have small bones, I'm pretty short, I can't drink regular milk since I'm lactose-intollerant and I have a protruding gut even when my bodyfat is down to 8%. Plus, I have some minor heart and lungs problems and I drink and smoke pot several times a week. Yet I managed to go from 125 lbs to 165 lbs with very little effort and I'm still growing. Did I do this by reporting to this board every problem I would encounter? Actually yes:) But as you go on, you understand that you should just quit complaining about what God gave you and remember that noBODY's perfect, so learn to live with what you have.

I appreciate the replies. While I may sound whiny, I really am trying to be as realistic as possible. I understand this is the body type I was born with, nothing I can do to change that and I'm totally cool with it. A lot of people just don't seem to understand that while it is possible to gain weight and add muscle, it is 10x as hard if you have a fast metabolism with thin bone structure as opposed to the other way around.

I'm gonna try to start eating more...more meals per day and cutting down on the junk. My workout program has been solid, but without enough calories the gains are going to be very slow. I'll just have to make the best with what I got and keep at it. While I won't look as big/muscular as a lot of guys out there can be, I will have to make do :)

Hmm I started similar at 6'1 155 lb. But I actually think its an advantage in some way. I've never done a cardio session (apart from playing soccer once a week) yet my bf is still los and you can see the trace of a 6 pack. Also all my muscles are pretty well defined, and I have the nice V shape, only after 6 months working out.

I suppose it depends what you want to look like. I'll never look like swacrcenegger or any other pro bodybuilder, but most girls don't like that anyway...most girls like lean and cut...so after hating my skinniness for years, I've now come to be thankful for it, seriously, I've had nothing nothing but compliments from girls at 6'1 178lb.

800 psush ups? I'd consider myself pretty fit and strong(ish) for my size., but I couldn't do 100 pushups. I don't think 800 is physically possible, unless you did like 80 sets of 10 or something....in which case you need to get out more!!

Read again my post. It will be a little harder to bulk if you have a fast metabolism, but absolutely possible. Have you seen the problems I have? Yet I managed to gain almost 40 lbs, which is pretty much I think. And my metabolism is REALLY FAST: as a child, I would eat like a pig yet I was 35 lbs underweight. Obviously not anybody can get to 200 lbs at 5'9 without dedicating their whole life to it, but EVERYBODY can easily get to 160 lbs with a little effort.

Also, you won't look bigger than big-boned guys, but surely you will look better and more muscular, since small joints really help looking good with bulging muscles, no doubt about it.

Could someone define BIG BONED GUYS?

What exactly is it does it consist of a measurement like wrist size, ankle size etc?

I am at the end of medium frame as my wrist measure 7/1/2 and my ankles measure 9 inches so I was just wondering are the big boned guys the ones with wrist over 8 inches?
