A report from the Wheatley Institute at Brigham Young University revealed that having multiple sexual partners during the dating years can lead to higher divorce rates in future marriages. Individuals with fewer sexual partners before marriage reported higher levels of relationship satisfaction, sexual satisfaction, and emotional closeness with their spouses. The number of lifetime sexual partners before marriage was found to be negatively associated with marriage satisfaction and stability.
The report indicates a correlation between fewer sexual partners before marriage and better marital outcomes. Specifically:
- Individuals with only their spouse as a sexual partner had a 45% chance of high marital stability, compared to 25% (5-9 partners) and 14% (10+ partners).
- Each additional sexual partner reduced marital satisfaction by about 4%, stability by 6.5%, and sexual satisfaction by 4%.
- Nearly 80% of those sexually inexperienced before marriage reported high emotional closeness, over 20% higher than those with multiple lifetime sexual partners before marriage.
