Un-freaking-believable! You can't even pick goddamned berries when Massachussetts "hunters" come up here. Every damn year they kill someone or someone's pets.

Hunter charged with killing man picking berries in Vermont

September 5, 2005

WHITINGHAM, Vt. --A Vermont man out picking berries was shot and killed by a hunter this weekend, police said.

State Police identified the victim as Douglas Bartlett, 50, of Jacksonville, Vt. Family members called police Saturday afternoon when Bartlett failed to return from berry-picking. His vehicle was located off Lone Pine Road in Whitingham, and troopers found his body nearby.

Police have charged Brian Gilbert, 26, of Charlemont, Mass., with second-degree murder. Massachusetts State Police say a relative of Gilbert's called Sunday to report Gilbert had shot and killed a man while hunting in Vermont. Gilbert told police he mistook the victim for a bear.
He was being held in Springfield, Vt., for arraignment on Tuesday in Windham District Court.

I don't pick berries...I pick fiddle heads, though.

The point is...this is a serious problem in both VT and NH. Hunters in neighboring states come here to hunt and shoot at anything that moves...often other hunters, dogs, horses...they've even shot COWS for crying out loud. It's ridiculous.

The only bears up here are very dark brown or black. How the hell anyone could confuse a 50 year old man for a bear is beyond me. The guy with the gun was an idiot, bottom line.

I went hunting with a bow in VT and accidentally shot a ****** who miraculously went back into his dam with my arrow in his side. I felt bad and never would hunt again but i blame me shotting the ****** on alcohol. When you go hunting there really isnt anything else to do but to drink and shoot stuff. Yes im a dumbass.

Men frequently err by talking too much. They often monopolize conversations, droning on and on about topics that bore women to tears. They think they're impressing the women when, in reality, they're depressing the women.

Ha, there's one mounted up in my boss's office, and I live/work in Carlsbad (San Diego area), CA! Two of my coworkers got into a debate over whether a jackalope is a fictional animal or not.

Stay out of the woods

Just stay out of the freakin woods and this shouldn't be a problem. Why would some imbacile be roaming around the woods collecting berries anyway? That's just weird! I don't mean to pass judgement, but come on, really! You can buy berries at Shop 'n Save cheaper than the gas to get to the woods. I'd be worried about stepping on a bear trap, getting shot, or picking a posionous berry.

Of course, the fact that this guy had a famiy, eats things out of the woods, and managed to get himself shot in the remote wilderness all prove he had very poor decision making skills.

Um...a lot of people go into the woods...hiking, camping...and picking berries. The problem isn't with the guy being out picking berries. The problem is with the idiots who shoot carelessly. You almost never hear about VT or NH hunters killing each other in the woods when they're hunting. It's almost always M*******s...every year they kill someone or shoot a horse, cow or dog thinking it's a deer. Anyone who has actually SEEN these wild animals can easily tell the difference between a deer or bear and a 50 year old man.

I can't believe you're blaming the guy picking berries for some moron shooting him while bear hunting.

Here in the midwest, a trial has gotten underway for the hunter who gunned down six people last year. New England apparently isn't the only place where hunters decide that humans are better targets than deer.

I gotta laugh every time i hear a story like this.

Mistook him for a bear... lol

You americans are just really really trigger happy. I have some relatives from Mass. that come over to Canada to hunt, on a yearly basis, and they are insane. I hardly trust them with their guns.

What is it with shooting things that gets those guys off?

Why would you take a chance of shooting at somthing, if you don't have a clear view of what it is? I've done my share of hunting and would never dream of shooting at something just cause it moves... I need to know for sure that it is a deer, or a bear or whatever.....

It's stupid but at the same time I could see how it could happen. Hunter hears noise out of the berry bush, however doesn't see anything. He thinks it's an animal and shoots, goes in, sees some old guy who was picking berries.

Either start a movement to close hunting season (which is very likely gonna happen after this), or don't go into the woods during it (the smart thing to do). There isn't much else you can do about this.

No way they will ever close hunting season. What they need to do is not allow out of staters to come up here to hunt.

Yeah, VT should secede from the Union. Worked out well last time someone tried it.

Seriously, your elitist attitude bothers me. Sure, the guy was an idiot, but thinking that pretty much anyone from out of state is an idiot? Come on. People are people.

If it were only one or two incidents over a period of 10 years then I wouldn't have the attitude I do. This happens at least once every hunting season and it's ALWAYS someone from Mass. who does it. There have been years where it's happened over 5 times in the very short hunting season...again...all Mass. residents. It's a pattern.

I don't have anything against Mass. residents...I just don't want any of them bringing guns into the area I live if they can't tell the difference between a deer/bear and a man/woman/child/cow/horse/dog. I really don't think that's asking too much.
