What about a Bushmaster AR-15? or AK-47? Handguns, I don't know, that just seems, dangerous. That would suck if a kid found one of my handguns lying around and shot himself with it.
Yes, but with a handgun you can keep it with you and you can keep it out of sight at the same time. If you need it, it's there (like when you go to ask them to quiet down). Just make sure that you keep it out of reach and unloaded when you're at home-- keep the ammo in one location and the gun in another nearby, but secure place where
you can reach it quickly. Don't leave it "laying around". You could also use a trigger lock, but I wouldn't-- a locked gun is useless in an emergency situation. The time spent finding the key, taking the lock off and sliding in the clip could be your last. Just make sure to check with your local laws regarding concealed carry firearms first.
Now, If you walk up to your neighbor's apartment with a kalashnikov in your hands, well... You might just escalate the situation into full-blown chaos and wind up in prison over it (not fun). It is for this reason that I recommend a handgun for personal protection. The problem with an assult rifle is that it is manly used for home defence (aside from military use, of course). If the guy comes to your door making threats, by all means, aim that 7.62 mother****er about head-level with him until he decides to go away. It would be a better option for you to have an assult rifle than what you currently possess, but if you actually use one of those weapons in self defence you will probably be crucified in a court of law for doing so, even though it might actually be 'legal' (which, it might not-- check your local laws).
Due to the stigma associated with assault rifles, I would suggest that you stick with a good 12-gauge shotgun instead. The Mossberg 500, for example, would be an excellent choice for home defence.
Anyways, I hope that I was in some way helpful. Good luck with the situation and stay safe.
