Allen, don't you think the swearing/cesoring filter is redundant?

I'm sure as grown men we can all handle these words, and it's not like the words are blotted out anyway (fvck, sh1t, bytch).
THE BOTTOM LINE IS:
There is no need for the ****ing thing.

I think Allen said something a while ago about this, and I will very loosely paraphrase him here, but if we go around telling everyone what f*cking assh*les they are all the f*cking time, those c*ck-sucking bast*rds that run those f*cking searches on that f*cking google-dot-f*cking-com who are doing a search on f*cking b*tch-ass c*nts who take c*ck up their f*cking assh*les will get linked to this f*cking site instead of the porn that they are looking for and then you'll have all the f*cking d*ckless porn-pervs posting all kinds of f*cking sh*t to this sweet-f*cking-ass site.

Comprende?

Really? I didn't know word-for-word content of the site was used by search engines.

The reason has to do with maturity.

The only ones who complain about the censor are teenagers who think swearing makes them look cool or mature or grownup (when actually it's just the opposite).

The adults never complain about it and rarely if ever invoke the censor when posting. (Of course, some never mature and are cursed with a teenage mentality for life... but we won't go into that.)

Keep in mind that the past greats of this board, the ones you often hear quoted, such as Anti-dump, BigDon, Krynnster, etc., never ever invoked the censor or felt the need to come up with creative ways to get around it when posting.

Don't always be the one putting yourself out for her. Don't always be the one putting all the effort and work into the relationship. Let her, and expect her, to treat you as well as you treat her, and to improve the quality of your life.

Actually I'm not a teenager (or an immature adult
) but I do take your point.

Very true. I also believe that the best posts/posters are the ones who never need to swear to make their point but nevertheless, I still think the present situation is ridiculous (where you read 100 posts a day that have fvck, bytch etc. in them; it's just a little annoying).

I never used to use vulgar language but after nearly five years of reading usenet posts on ASF my on-line language went down the toil*t. I'll be the first to admit that the frequent use of expletives is a cheap way to add emotional impact to your words, and IMO, the main benefit of censoring expletives is that it encourages people to give their words impact in more constructive ways--by expressing a powerful idea.

I for one like being made self-aware of each time I'm about to use a censored word, because the effort of using *ssterisks is gradually nudging me back to a cleaner and more mature style of online expression.

The only time the censorship annoyed me was when I was trying to discuss a sexual topic and I had to type cl*toris. It bothered me, because in that particular context I actually DIDN'T want the word perceived as an expletive and the fact that the word was being censored gave it a distracting expletive-like quality. (I have since deleted that entire post.)

I, of course, use expletives all the time. At least, I do on bulletin boards.

However, one thing that I have noticed is that some words (the "mild" expletives) such as hell, damn, ass, slut, etc. are not censored, but some words, like sn*tch and d*ck, are. The only times I have ever used those words on this forum to my recollection have been legitimate, which is of course ironic. Basically, I'll try to say,

"You should not try to take revenge against a person, as Captain Ahab learned in Melville's novel Moby ****." (Close approximation to a REAL piece of advice I was trying to give someone).

Also

"If you can steal a girl away from her guy so easily, you will always be wondering how difficult it will be for another guy to ****** her away from you." (Another close approximation to something I attempted to say. As a side note, maybe I'm sheltered or something but I hardly ever hear the word 'sn*tch' used in that bad context anymore.)

fück man, just use character map and use the Alt ability.

ü = alt + 0252

Figure it out. I don't use it, but the langauge filter never did bother me.
