I need help with convos

I was talking to a hb8 that my buddy's gf introduced me to today during lunch for about half an hour. things went okay and i ended up asking her to go to the movies with me and she sad yes. the problem was that the conversation kept dying. i was asking general questions like what classes u have, do u like your teachers, the people in your classes etc etc, and when we were talking things went well and she seemed into me but there were kind of awkward gaps between the questions that i was asking her. she wasnt really giving me anything else to pick up on and ask her about. do i just need more experience talking to girls or is there something i can start doing to improve my conversation skills?
