I'm glad the award didn't go to Avatar. Not that I didn't enjoy it, but best picture? Hell no. Avatar won what it deserved, i.e. everything related to cinematography and visual effects.

Avatar was more than just a pretty movie; it was an experience. It will be remembered long after The Hurt Locker and all the other contenders are forgotten.

Best picture is about more than just the best story.

Hurt Locker, lowest grossing best picture winner of all time, of all time.

Honestly, I think people just hate James Cameron. They know he can get butts in the seats...but I think they really just don't like the guy.

I watched Avatar but not hurt locker.

Avatar was a good film, but the story was basic, average and nothing note worthy, without all the gloss it would have been pritty shi* tbh.

It was simply a new age story revolving around native indians and oppression by the western nations, spun with gloss, CGI with a futuristic spin to it and dash of feel good emotions i.e it was a feel good emotional roller-coaster ride and that's all it was.

It was far too tame for my liking, I personnally expected something more with the hype, in faireness, it was like wathcing a Disney movie, or something done by pixar.

It was sold mainly on the fact it was 3d, I saw this film in none 3D and It was clear the gimmick of the 3D was it's biggest draw - I'd watch it again in 3D, I suspect watching it without is like going on a roller coaster and closing your eyes for the duration.

I loved The Hurt Locker. This was pretty much Platoon for the modern generation.

The oscars are a joke. Many of the voters don't even watch the movies, it's all based on what they "think" they should vote for. Cameron and Tarantino are pretty hated by most oscar folks.

The only good thing about the oscars is that I can see movies that wouldn't otherwise make it to my semi-small town in Japan.

the only american movies that make it here are blockbusters (aka avatar) and oscar contenders.

Hurt Locker should by here within a few months now.

Well I'm here to tell you there is such a magic wand. Something that will make you almost completely irresistible to any woman you "point it" at. Something guaranteed to fill your life with love, romance, and excitement.

If by this you mean it had nothing to do with the reality of Iraq, then you are right.

Actual Iraqi vets are saying:

"... if you know anything about the Army, or about operations or life in Iraq, you'll be so distracted by the nonsensical sequences and plot twists that it will ruin the movie for you. It certainly did for me."

"the way the team goes about their missions is completely absurd,"

"while the film accurately depicted the scale of bomb violence and the relations between Iraqis and troops, "just about everything else wasn’t realistic.""

"I was amazed that a movie so bad could get any kind of accolades from anyone."

"A review published March 8, 2010 in the Air Force Times[43] cited overall negative reviews from bomb experts in Iraq attached to the 4th Brigade, 1st Armored Division, quoting a bomb disposal team leader who called the movie’s portrayal of a bomb expert “grossly exaggerated and not appropriate”, and describing the lead character as “more of a run and gun cowboy type…exactly the kind of person that we’re not looking for.” Another bomb disposal team member said that the lead character’s “swagger would put a whole team at risk. Our team leaders don’t have that kind of invincibility complex, and if they do, they aren’t allowed to operate. A team leader’s first priority is getting his team home in one piece.”"

"Some of the scenes are so disconnected with reality to be almost parody."
The Matrix still has you.

Borat would say: "Letting a womans direct a movie films is like letting a monkey fly a plane!"

"A woman has won a Oscars?!? Dr. Yamak would not believe this! She must given good hand reliefs and very nice sexy time to Academy Awards directors!"

I thought it was a fantastic film.

Real military life is very dry, drawn out, and boring. This isn't a documentary, this is a fictional story as fake and surreal as Avatar. In the military, a good saying is "Hurry up and wait!", which IMO doesn't make good film.

There were plenty of "facepalm" moments I had in the Hurt Locker where I thought to myself "hey that ain't realistic at all!", but guess what? I got past that and realized that it's a FICTIONAL STORY and the writers and directors can do whatever they want with it.

Avatar was a high budget, populist, "center mass", recycled story(think Last Samurai). While I thought it was a good movie also, and fun to watch, the only thing it really stood out with is it's CGI, and sorry but stunning visuals and mastery of special fx doesn't automatically hand you a Best Picture.

I understand that artistic license has to be taken with how "real" things are otherwise you can end up with a boring film. My problem is that films like this are so far away from reality that they break my suspension of disbelief.

For as accurate as that movie was, those soldiers may as well have pulled out light sabers and started fighting terrorists with 'the Force'. The unreality of the entire film distracted me from everything else that was going on. The main character was an unbelievable portrayal of a modern U.S. Army soldier, and that destroys the 'realistic feel' the movie was going for.

If the movie had gone for 'fun and obviously fake' like "Rambo 6: Bomb Squad" then that could have been a great movie: Rambo isn't trying to be real. The movie tried for the 'real feel' and that's why it fails so epically.

Honestly, I have never seen the Hurt Locker. I have no interest in war movies and even less interest in the Iraq war.

After reading the previous comments I'm amazed it won the awards it did. Maybe I'll rent it for a buck and see if it deserved anything.

I've seen both. Hurt Locker on blu-ray and Avatar in 3d in theaters. Avatar is miles ahead. Sure the story could be better, but when you take the whole experience of watching it in 3d into account its no contest. I had to piss real bad for last 1 1/2 hours of Avatar, but i held it in cause i didnt want to miss anything. Hurt Locker was just like another war movie to me, did not draw me in at all, ending was weak too.

Yep that's what i mean. My dad and his friends say the same kinda thing about platoon and I still like that movie. I should note that I also like western films and these war genre movies are pretty much dressed up versions of that. Ofcourse it's not accurate or anything but it's a good movie going experience. I really liked the sniper duel scene, that kicked a$$.

It doesn't matter how good-looking you are, how romantic you are, how funny you are... or anything else. If she doesn't have something INVESTED in you and the relationship, preferably quite a LOT invested, she'll dump you, without even the slightest hesitation, as soon as someone a little more "interesting" comes along.
