Whats up DJs. I'm going out for football this year, my coach wants me to play middle linebacker+guard. I know how to play guard, but it's freaking hard to find info on the net about linebacker....Unfortunately, I had to go away to NY this summer, and missed a lot of the camps. So id like to have some knowledge of the basics, like when to blitz , pass rush, that kind of stuff before i go to double sessions. Thanks A LOT guys if you can help.

PS-sorry if this is the wrong forum.

I'm also doing HS football this year.... I am playing TE/DE... but are you going to be a Cat or Bandit linebacker? I don't know if they use those terms outside of Texas though.... but one is edged more to the rush and the other the passing game.

Linebackers are always the crazy pyscho madmen it takes balls to try and get through the line.. good luck :D

Haha, Texan's really take their football seriously. I have never heard any of those terms before. Linebackers are generally very aggressive and very agile. You're going to need some speed to be a good linebacker. I can remember in my older days of playing football, our defensive line was pretty fat and slow so we kinda relied on our linebackers to stop the rushers.

I want to play Football because I like to hit people:) I also wrestle, and train a lot of the heavy bag/with weights/kettlebells. The problem is that I haven't really grown up w/ the sport of Football, so at the moment I'm trying like hell to learn past the basics of the sport by reading books and watching games.
As for my speed, im really pretty fast, agility wise im decent but i have yet to really test myself as ive only had a few practices as a LB. What I'm most concerned with is learning the reads, and wtf you do if you know its a pass or a run. I play middle btw and am not familiar w/ the Texan terms:) I live in Maine right now so we arent as big on Football. BTW I wanna play middle because there seems to be a lot of tackling there, good for takedowns in wrestling and tackling just kicks ass.

Thx for those who helped, and sry bout the forum issue.

I was the "athlete" position in high school... I was all purpose, so I'm ok at linebacker.

First, look at the formation the offense is in.

Is it a run? Pass? Play action?

Drop back into pass coverage unless you see a handoff, then run like crazy at the ball carrier and demolish him.

If you're an inside linebacker, you generally drop back, and you protect the middle, and blast anyone that comes there. If you're an outside linebacker, you're the primary tackler on outside runs, and SWING PASSES.

If you get called to blitz, make sure you know which hole you're plugging. On a blitz, your goal is backfield destruction of whoever has the ball. If it's a pass, kill the QB. If it's a run, penetrate the line, find the ball carrier, and destroy him.

It's all about "read and react".

Pass coverage - you are usually matched up with following the TIGHT END, or possibly running backs in man coverage.

In zone coverage, it will usually be a tight end, or a reciever who is making a slant.

Don't bite on play action. Everything will come from experience and when you get enough reps.
