I'm 22 and live with my folks. Although I've lived "on my own" at dorms on and off, I was still financially dependent then. I don't want to move out to be able to "do what I want" or rebelling or any of that. I'm already free to do whatever I want.
Yes, I've been down, and I've realized how to make myself happy. The first problem is that I am sick and tired of being babied and having a safety net to catch me everytime I fall. It seems my folks are so scared of seeing me fail, that they don't even let me try. I have all the things most people would dream of, but I don't feel like I'm getting much life experience from living at home.
The second issue is that about a year ago, I moved from a city to this very small town. I don't care if it's in my head or not, I cannot stand it here. It's like I live in a ****ing village. The population is roughly 40k; half are college students, and the other half are retired (I'm exaggerating, but not much). 85% of the population is white. I miss diversity. I also miss shopping malls, department stores, drive-thrus, and crowds of people! When you go to cities, people may look like they have "low class" but to be honest, I feel more at home among those type of people than with a bunch of white old folks who live in million-dollar mansions.
So, without getting off tangent, for those of you who have moved out, and are no longer financially dependent on any sort of family (and perhaps started over from scratch in a new city):
What life lessons have you learned from moving out?
What challenges or difficulties have you faced?
Have you become more of a MAN as a result of moving out?
Do any of you regret moving out, and wish you still lived with family?
I would really appreciate hearing about your experiences overall. It would be nice to get an idea of what it would be like before I dive in.
