I've just started taking a russian sambo class, and it works wonders for my self esteem. It's very therapeutic for me even though my entire body hurts like hel1 afterwards.

But I'm worried about getting cauliflower ears. I heard that you're supposed to drain your ear if it gets red and inflamed, but are the pre-stages of cauliflower ears always that blatant? And can you drain them yourself? What time frame do you have to drain your ear once it's swollen and puffy?

Sambo is a grappling sport much like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Cauliflower ears are what you get when you shock the ear and tear the skin from the cartilage. They look big and ugly.

Cauliflower ear is common in boxing and wrestling as well as just about any full contact martial arts. The use of wrestling headgear allowed me to avoid getting it. I had a buddy who got it (even while using headgear) and we had to stick a needle in his ear that night to drain it. Do a search using google or ask your coach, maybe he can give you some information.

Good Luck!

The only way to prevent that is to get a wrestling headgear. Especially doing shyt like Sambo, you could get your ear ripped off.
