When you have a 9-5 , you usually have a set routine.. it can help layout and guide you through the day as you know what you need to be doing at a specific time, and everything is structured for the most part. After work, you might have time for working out and a few other things, and your routine is set.. you are being productive as you knockout your work, you knockout your self improvement activity or two whether thats working out or working out and meditation, boom you're good to go.
When you don't have a 9-5 / own your own business or maybe you're in college, you have alot of free time and you might be lacking a proper routine and structure..
what I found works great is this:
1) Set alarms on your phone every few hours or at prime times of the day where you would usually catch yourself getting lost in leisurely activity , set your alarm to say "What is your outcome?" so that you're constantly reminded that if you were to continue this activity you are currently doing everyday, what would it lead to ?
2) Create a task list for every day that you can check off as you complete it.. When you have your alarms to catch you while you're on autopilot in some unproductive manner or activity, you will suddenly be reminded of your tasks and boom can go knock it out
3) Use the 5 minute rule.. If you don't feel like doing stuff thats necessary for your goals... Just tell yourself you will do it for just 5 minutes.. Anyone can do something for 5 minutes, even if you feel like crap.. What you will find is, that once you start, and you do 5 minutes, you'll feel like doing 10, and when you do 10, you'll feel like doing 20. and next thing you know, youll do 40 minutes or complete whatever activity it was, whether cardio, weightlifting, meditation, welding, drawing, painting, playing guitar, working, whatever it is
4) Use the pomodoro technique.. so you dont burn yourself out if you're working on alot of stuff.. This means you work for 30 minutes and then take a break, and then work again for 30 minutes.. Working in 30 minute intervals helps you not get stressed or exhausted.. make sure u dont take too long breaks either though
5) Never skip twice. If you skip once, thats fine.. but if you skip a habit two days in a row, you're likely to fall off the wagon really quickly.
Every once in a while you gotta remind yourself of the bigger picture and where you want to see yourself in weeks from now , months, etc. You have to already have mapped out your ideal lifestyle and what it looks like when you have reached those goals or benchmarks. It helps to talk about this sh.t with friends and people close to you to further cultivate the mindset.
