I was thinking about taking website design classes so I could create my own webpage and possibly create a forum. How much work goes into creating a forum like this?

really not that much if you know what your doing. Most of it is Money and Time[not time meaning work hours rather waiting slowly for the population of the site to grow little by little.]

Go to "vbulliten.com" and check the pricing. That will tell you how much a site costs. Then look around for a host server and space. That will tell you how much it costs.

I can't give you an accurate number because I don't know all of the prices.

okay... what exactly do you want... If you want a site like this you'll need vbulliten like they said. but there are many free programs that do a decent job...

Server space will normally run you about $10 for a nice big site. You can probably get away with anywhere from $1-$5 and still manage a site. A server will normally register a site name for you too... meaning
yourname.whatever for example you could go with sosuave.net... oh...nvm thats taken :p

Im me for more info... If you just want a forum like this you can get them fro free but they have an add on them, which is no big deal if your not plannign on a huge site or somehting... anyway contact me and I'll tell you specs to your situation as to the furthest of my knowledge.

how much $$$$, and time
free-50,000
a few days to a few years.

Sosuave has been around since 98 I belive so thats 6 years to get to this size... with very little advertising, more word of mouth and people just stumbling

most of those are BS*, find a good programer and learn off of them. You'll remember things a lot better and it becomes more personalized. Plus it's free.

*unless they are college ones or something with backing, i'm talking about the ones offered at BestBuy and in the back of computer stores. They really don't teach you that much...

If you really want to learn a language just go live in the country for a few years without any translators... you'll pick it up. you have to.

50k? Holy cow! How come you get numbers out of your ass and noone ever calls your bull****?

This place costs at most 1k per month wich is NOT a lot of money considering all the income Allen makes out of it.

50k would be a expensive as hell site.

yes sosuave is probably more around 1k or less.[more like less]

I was giving a range... meaning from here to there. If you really wanted to go wild you could spend 50k on a site like this. If you really wanted to you could get away with spending nothing on this site. I wasn't pulling that out of my arse, I was telling the range of money you could spend on a site like this.

and no where did I say that price was monthly. I was talking about a longer time then by month for the estimate. 50k a month would be like a new car every month, which unless your rich is pointless, though better then spending it on a website.

mainly advertisement, upkeep[if you want to hire someone], design, advertisement, space, bandwith, stuff like that.

Really it would be harder to spend over a k then under it. Mainly because there is a limit to how much you can put into a board like this.

If you just want a forum, you can find free sites like invisionfree and proboards, or you can spend a few bucks for some space then get a phpBB for free. The software for this site vbulliten can cost a pretty penny too. I think it's somewhere around $200, if you want to go all out and actually buy the software from a freesite they can charge a couple thousand for the rights. [meaning you own the thing and can edit the actual code legally]
