I've read articles that milk can cause osteoperosis (if thats spelled right) in the elderly. due to high calcium absorption from a younger age. which wears the cells down.

Back a year ago i started to drink 3 cups of milk per day. before that i barely got around to drinking any. so yea now im drinking 3 cups per day.

So the question is, how much cups is supposed to be healthy?
and how much cups is unhealthy?? (as in exceeding the daily average)

I thought osteoperosis was caused by a lack of minerals, making to bones brittle and weak.

that is true. Many times people suggest having more calcium intake in your early life is more likely to prevent osteoporosis. But apparently, this study contradicts that.

In an article in the Journal of Nutrition he writes, "Hip fractures are more frequent in populations where dairy products are commonly consumed and calcium intakes are relatively high. Is there any possibility that this is a causal relationship?"

Mark Hegsted, retired Harvard professor of nutrition believes we get too much calcium.
Hegsted explains that the human body adapts to low calcium intake by using what is available quite efficiently. High calcium intake, on the other hand, causes the body to decrease the amount of calcium that is absorbed while excreting the excess. That's why peoples with low calcium consumption manage to form healthy skeletons.
With age, the body moves from building bone mass to losing bone mass. Hegsted opines that the inefficient consumers have permanently damaged their abilities to effectively use dietary calcium or even to conserve calcium in the bones later in life. Hegsted's hypothesis explains why high dairy consumers so often end up with rampant bone loss.

Still another doubter is Dean Ornish, MD. He writes, "The real cause of osteoporosis in this country is not insufficient calcium intake, it's excessive excretion of calcium in the urine. Even calcium supplementation is often not enough to make up for the increased calcium excretion."

I drink about a gallon of whole milk in 3 days(warm milk really helps to fall asleep). I'm not sure about cons/pros of drinking milk...on one side its a good source of calcium and protein, on another all other mammals stop drinking milk once they grow up so there has to be something to it.

yea..something. anywways here's more TRUTH into the whole milk and calcium thing..

Calcium? Where do the COWS get calcium for their big bones? Yes... from plants! The calcium they consume from plants has a large amount of magnesium... necessary for the body to absorb and USE the calcium.

The calcium in cow's milk is basically useless because it has insufficient magnesium content (those nations with the highest amount of milk/dairy consumption also have the highest rates of osteoporosis. Proof? How about a controlled study of 78,000 nurses over a period of 12 years?

Cows milk has three times the calcium as does human breast milk. No matter, neither are very usable because in order to be absorbed and used their MUST be an equal quantity of MAGNESIUM (as exists in the greens that cows eat to get all the calcium they need for their big bones). Milk has only enough magnesium to absorb around 11% (33mg per cup) of calcium.

Per the USDA 8 ounces (one cup) of cows milk contains:

Calcium, Ca mg 291.336
Magnesium, Mg mg 32.794

The USDA recommends 1200mg of calcium per day. The USDA recommended three cups of milk a day only have 900mg of calcium. Some argue that only 1/3 of the magnesium is necessary. Mother nature seems to suggest it should be one to one. If the ratio for proper absorption were 1/3 magnesium to one calcium then no more than 300mg of that 900mg of calcium is usable. If, in fact, it is a one to one ratio... only 98.38mg of calcium is usable.

It is not a matter of how much calcium one ingests... but how much one does not lose.
so anyway what this means is calcium isnt fully absorbed because we may lack the necessary ratio of magnesium to be able to absorb the calcium.
So in that case, i assume it would suggest that by consuming more greens, our human bodies would be able to absorb more calcium effectively.

by the way fellas, stay away from milk that came from cows that were pumped with hormones. I know mines doesnt contain any cause it says it right on the box...but u guys should beware. They say it has it has no effect after our consumption. But traces of hormones do eventually get leaked to the milk and into our stomachs....

Anyway you can read about the whole thing here:

Magnesium....too much magnesium ****s you up. Careful there man.
I'm about 95% sure you're thinking of mercury.

Just because a woman listens to you and acts interested in what you say doesn't mean she really is. She might just be acting polite, while silently wishing that the date would hurry up and end, or that you would go away... and never come back.

Yeah it tastes HORRIBLE in my opinion.

Something like making powdered milk, don't know if ANYONE had that, but GOOD lord stay away from powdered milk.

So yeah, so you know my brother is Vegan and I'm a vegetarian because of the crap that's in certain things now adays. Seems I can't even trust vegetarian stuff with all the crap they do with farms.

Anyways, there are certain kinds I prefer over others. The chocolate soy milk is not bad, tastes like watered down chocolate milk. I've also tried the vanilla stuff which isn't that bad either, but to be honest it's up to you whether or not you don't mind the taste. It's pretty good for you all in all.

As far as how many cups of milk is healthy or unhealthy? Well most food guides say to have like 3-5 servings of dairy or what have you, because of the high fat content in most cheeses, I would say that on average I drink about half a litre to 3/4 of a litre a day.

Up here milk is about $1/litre. It's about $3.89 for a 4 L jug.

Hormones in cows? I live on a pretty big dairy farm and we don't pump any hormones in cows. Though i agree milk does have alot of hormones because it's meant to help little calves become strong & healthy faster.

Anyways at 1 point i was drinking 8 Litres of milk a day, that lasted about 3 days then i puked it up on the 3rd day and couldn't drink milk for a couple weeks. 3 cups per day shouldn't do you any harm. I have a jug of milk right here with me and it says "per 250 ml serving (1cup) you get 29% of your reccomended calcium, 44% of reccomended vitamine D, and 11% of vitamin E" I'm drinking about 1-2L litres these days and i haven't suffered any ill effects so far (i'm 19) I guess i'll find out when i get older.
