I'm targeting a lady which is attracted to 'buffed up' men, ie Nichlos Cage, George Clooney types. I'm 5'11 242 lbs, size 44 pants. I just dropped 45 lbs since March.
I joined a 24 hour gym yesterday. If i really work at it, how long before I'll have a noticeable change. I'm working abs and upper body with weight machines.

Yeah, I'm sure I remember how ripped Cage was in Ghost Rider.
I was quite amazed.

But I've seen recent pictures of Clooney with a beer gut.
Not buff at all...

Uh, you're doing what? I hope I'm reading this wrong, but please tell me your not trying to "convert" fat into muscle or burn fat off of certain locations. That can't be done. Work your legs too and don't use machines; they suck.

Best thing you can do is head over to a bodybuilding forum (like bodybuilding.com) and start reading up on nutrition and workouts. Once you have a plan, post it there and get some feedback.

Oh and you're *not* doing this for that lady; you're doing it for yourself. You wanna look better , feel better and be more attractive. If you don't frame it as being for yourself, you'll quit if that girl ever rejects you.

Good luck and congrats on the 45lbs; very commendable.

True, dont be one of those guys who goes in the gym and works abs chest and arms and calls it good. Work on your WHOLE physique.

Your progress depends on many factors, but 6-8 weeks or so and you can definitely see results.

Make sure you have a PROPER nutrition program going, because this is what kills most people. They only do 50% of the 100%.

My lifting is very good, and I do quite well, and it has gotten me a physique. BUT, without the food and my diet it wouldn't be nearly what it is, and I contribute quite a bit to the nutrition.

And again, do a FULL body routine. Get something going 4-5 days a week. In the end, it will be much better than trying to do just upper and abs

If you're skinny and starting off I'd say about 4 months, you really have to work hard.

Since you are quite overweight (not used disparagingly here) you will see results very quickly. The law of diminishing return applies to fitness as well.

No, benjiprice, I'm not doing it for her, but I'm always looking to do things better for myself , I had 10 bad teeth pulled and replaced with a partial lower and full upper, dyed hair to natural original color. My wife of 27 years died this February, so I'm trying to improve my stock. I'm trying to lose fat to improve appearance and lower my high blood pressure. I was my wife's caretaker so long, I didn't have time to take care of myself.

Omen, the reason I was working on abs and upper body, is that is where I'm most out of shape, but you're right , I want everything symentrical

Nick, I'm by no means skinny

Hey, good job at acknowledging what you need to work on. That's the first step towards success.

If you truely are motivated, then the next step is to read some threads from the H&F Vault to actually understand what fitness is, how to achieve it, how to KEEP it, and how it applies to you directly.

If you really want us to help you as best we can, follow the guidance of the Where to Start thread at the top. It'll give you results faster than you can imagine.

whoever said machine weights are useless/dumb is an idiot
Machine weights are far from useless.

But a lot of people -- myself included -- think free weights are better for most exercises because they work stabilizing muscles better. But I do think it's a good idea to use a machine for certain potentially dangerous exercises, such as very heavy bench pressing without a spotter, toe-raisers, or squats.

I like dumbells, doing the less strong side first for each exercise, because such a workout does not favor one side or the other.

Back on topic, one can get results pretty fast. When I went to less frequent workouts with much heavier weights (even 1-4 rep range) I put on 10 lb in about a month, working against an extremely skinny natural body build.

I'm 5'7 128 I used to be 96 pounds.. yeah LOLZ

while I'm still skinny I'm not the scrawny twerp I used to be.. I started up on a weight gain program, that I sorta kinda threw together.. (with knowledge that both doctors and hard gainers told me) basiclly to make the long short.. it consisted of high calorie diet (healthy ones) and lots of protein.

I would always have a protein bar on me one that offered up at least 300 calories and have three of them for my 8-10 hour work days. eat one every three hours and I was good. then when I got home binged on eating.

gained 32 pounds in about 4 1/2 months of solid work going to the gym 3 times a week an hour a day. I'm incredibly slow though since at the time I didn't really do any cardio.. so yeah I'll be busting out 8 min miles lol. but hell at least I'm comfortable wearing a t-shirt and shorts and looking non sickly and have defined arms, chest, abs and shoulders.
