Who here has joined the military? How has it changed you perspective or personality? Good - Bad?

I'm going to USMC bootcamp in 3 months and would like to know how much it changes you personality wise.

My bro just went through this and YES it does change you ... understand this ... you're about to endure some extreme discipline that will change you for the rest of you life ... I noticed this :

Ups:
- listening skillz increased
- better organized person
- Allowed him to pump the muscles up
- kills off a lot of bad habits

Downs
- the talking skillz decreased because , if you think about it, you only speak when spoken to ....
- makes you horny as fvck after 3 months w/o a chick
- makes you a little bit too controlling and aggressive which can affect your game

listen mate, I don't know much about the US military, but i joined the Army Reserves about a year and a half ago. Recruit training is no walk in the park, its more mentally than physically demanding, but you also learn **** aboout yourself than you never knew existed. Btw the main advise I can offer you is DON'T TAKE ANYTHING PERSONALLY, if you do your not gonna get anywhere. And **** you do get horny as hell after a month or so of seeing no decent chicks, oh yeh and after you march out of basic training be prepared to walk around with a sense of extreme confidence, self disipline and pride. My pops served 2 tours in vietnam. We're all pretty sure that it was the war that changed him rather then the military itself. His closest (and near only friends) his age are all nam vets. He's very reserved yet openminded about alot of things. More then anything he enjoys life in a way that many people can and will never understand.

There's an old novel about Marine Corp Boot Camp called "Maggot."
The drill seargents were harder on recruits in the 70s.

Also, I 2nd the suggestion about not taking anything personally. Drill seargeant is a position that is a stepping stone in the enlisted soldier's career path. Many enlisted serve as a drill seargeant, but never for very long. This translates into a lot of variance between DSs. Some are meek and new, while others are hard-ass and sadistic.

I served 5 years in the Corps. I went to boot at Parris Island. I have to get my rear off to work, so I don't have much time to post right now. I'll try to get back with more details or answers later on if you have more questions. But here's some quick things to know.

1. The Marine Corps doesn't have Drill Seargents. They are Drill Instructors (DI's).
2. You will not be a Marine until the day you graduate boot camp, but IT WILL be the proudest day of your life.
3. DO NOT eyeball Your DI's or ever smart off or they will make your life hell, and you will spend a lot of time in "The Pit" (You'll soon learn what that is)
4. Do not swat the sand fleas that will be biting the **** out of you, at least when the DI is looking in your direction.
5. You will be lucky to get more than 3 straight hours of sleep per night.
6. You will experience more stress and pressure than you have ever had in your life. And it will not abate for 13 weeks straight. But don't worry, you will overcome and adapt.
7. You will most likey have 3-4 Drill Instructors for your platoon. One will be the Master Drill Instructor. One will be "The Heavy" and one will be "The light." But they will often change roles.
8. The DI's will be the epitome of "****y and funny," but don't you ever laugh at their humor.
9. Learn all of the Marine Corps ranks and exactly what they look like.
10. Learn the 11 Marine General orders for sentries, as well as the 12th "unspoken order." You will be tested on these verbally and physically when you're on your post or firewatch, when you least expect it.

I dont know much about the US army, but isn't 3 hours sleep a bad thing to have? Lack of sleep equals lack of concentration, and I'd imagine having a bunch of groggy marines trip over their feet during a beach landing (or falling asleep at the helm of a gigantic battleship) doesnt sound too efficient.

My dad served in the army for his conscription years, and he was always talking about how he was told to sleep 6-8 hours a night for max efficiency.

Oh, God I'm glad I came in here.

I'm not gonna be the guy who's gonna tell you not to do it, but I will tell you about the peeps I know who have.

My cousin came back from Iraq as a Marine, can't sleep, is violent and jumpy, not even the same f*cking person he used to be. His GF had enough of that bullsh*t, left, and now he's all f*cked up.

I know 3 ex jarheads besides him, 2 with PTSD, taking medications daily, drink hard as f*ck daily, and all seriously spastic motherf*ckers.

If your gonna go, I'd strongly recommend you consider a different branch. And that comment just got seconded by my ex-jarhead buddy sitting right next to me.

Then, once they've built their true-believer soldier eager to defend his country, they send him into an unwinnable war built on lies and order him to kill children and make Americans hated. Thus, the military then change you again into bitter, disillusioned, old baby-killer.

The military is for AFCs looking to become ALPHA.

I remember sitting next to a soldier from Afganistan, on an airplane in Atlanta. Some alpha .... This AFC soldier was an AFC when he joined and still is an AFC. He even told me that he was some high ranking official.

A high ranking official, who was afraid to take the armrest. A high ranking official who was afraid to take his space and show his authority. Some alpha.....

Yeah, the military does change you. It turns you into an AFC with muscles.

That is the dumbest thing iv'e heard in a while, okay if you think Soldiers are AFC's go and start insulting one of them, or better yet go start a fight with one. And army guys have some of the best sense of humour out there, so plz before criticising the military take a long hard look at yourself.
