I ask directly. If your performance is good and you've been with the company long enough, odds are they will grant your request based on that rather than how you ask.

use ****y and funny, be confident and smooth. if you need to, mention that youre may start looking otherwise. if they think that you wont leave, theres no reason to up your pay.

Good lord, a 16 year old giving a grown man advice. What do you know bout the corporate world, boy?

Picard, never indicate that you are looking around for another company unless your actually giving them your month's notice. Indicating that you might jump ship would make the management of any firm not want to promote you later on because you represent a risk. A recent study in the Academy of Management Journal concluded that it takes a minimum of $500.00 in advertising, retraining and transition costs to replace even the least of employees. The higher up the position of the person who quits, the higher the cost, so the Human Resource department would put a note on your company file if you indicate to your supervisor that you might leave. Unless you are at a sufficiently high managerial position such that they cannot afford to lose you, or you possess critical sensitive information, don't play that game.

As for asking for pay raise, WHEN YOU ARE GOING TO GET IT. In marketing you do not ask the customer if he would like to buy, you ask which credit card they would like to charge it to, as though it were the most natural thing in the world.

This tactic has actually worked for me, but it's very risky. I don't recommend it unless it's some sh1tty job you won't miss anyway.

Picard, weren't you looking for a job? How's that coming along?

You have to ask yourself for it first...

You need to honestly ask yourself if you deserve it.

"The Price of gas has gone up" or "I'm buying an HD TV and would like to be able to more easily afford the payments" don't really cut it.
Think like the owner of that business and ask yourself if:

- Your work output is consistently higher than that of your peers doing the
same job.
- You consistently go the extra mile
- You engage in very little or no personal emailing or web surfing at work
- You truly get along well with your boss and others in your department
- If you owned that particular business, would you grant yourself a raise?

I'm assuming that you're speaking of a pay boost that's "off schedule" relative to a normal annual review?

Why don't you observe how others in your department/company/similar company have done it? Could help for pointers and such.

You don't get what you don't ask for.

If you think you deserve a raise / promotion, then ask for it.

The only time I ever threatened to walk if I didn't get the promotion was when it was a respect issue. The boss was pissed, but he gave it to me with the spiel that "the next guy who threatens to walk, I'm just gonna let him walk" to which I replied "that's between you and the next guy". He made some hand gesture and said "You are now a senior software engineer, now get the fvck out of my office before I change my mind..."

Girl crazy. Chuck Norris Facts. Got to love them. (Your Signature)

As for the topic, bring up why you deserve one. Tell them all you've done for them. Make it pursuasive, and ordered. The more prepared you are for whatever they throw at you, the more likely you are to get it.

Thanks. I'm still trying to figure out why it's funny. I printed out the top 100 Chuck facts, and the wife grabbed it and said "this is the stupidest thing I've ever seen." Only thing was that she read it all the way through, and every once in a while cackled like a hyena.

Yes, those are quite entertaining

Chuck Norris qualified for (some race) with a top speed of 324 miles per hour, without a car.
