I understand a good smile is an important tool. But I have a problem. I look like an idiot when I try to smile. I have a decent smile when it's involuntary, but when I force it, it always looks... forced. And more like a scary clown smile or a creepy sneer. Anyone have advice on how to improve my deliberate smile?

just think about something funny...get a big grin going and then sorta turn it into a smirk.

a) Post a pic!
b) Do not fake smiles. Every girl spots a fake smile in a second.
Think of sth funny . Boost your state with sth positive or funny AND do not ever think about what your smile looks like. As soon as you do your true smile is lost.
c) Do not smile for other people, smile for yourself. IGNORE other people while smiling. Just have a good time by yourself IN PUBLIC. This is the only way it works. If you pay too much attention to other people, you will become insecure by their feedback (most of them will not smile back at you for HUNDREDS of reasons).

It's funny because I have a problem of smiling TOO much. I'm trying to cut back, no joke. People call me "smiley" and stuff.

Channel your excited feelings into positive thoughts and behaviors. You will attract women by being enthusiastic, radiating energy, and becoming someone who is fun to be around.
