I was in the grocery store recently and I came across the hot dogs. Now keep in mind I'm a big health nut and hot dogs are not the healthiest things in the world to eat due to the fat & sodium. Well I never thought about fat free hot dogs or 'light' hot dogs, which to my surprise were are actually healthy minus the sodium(0-2 grams of fat per dog). Does anyone know anything as to why I shouldn't consume 4-5 hot dogs a day to keep the protein intake up? Anyone ever used hot dogs as part of their diet to gain muscle?

Apart from the fact that they're processed piles of ****, do they contain nitrites?

Think of any part of a cow, and that's what is in a hot dog. They mix the leftovers from EVERY part from a cow into hot dogs. Yummy!

protein is protein.

I'm a health nut too, and the main reason I stay away from hotdogs is the sodium and the fact that alot of hotdogs are usually eaten avec buns, which are terrible.

I can't think of a reason to stay away from hotdogs if they are low in sodium and fat, although I always prefer a steak or turkey breast.

Check the transfats, and that other crap.

As a rule of thumb, I usually try to steer clear of processed foods...

[edit - hotdogs do contain alot of cholesterol, whether it's good/bad cholesterol I don't know.

I heard that hot dogs are consumed of cow liver, heart and so on. Those are muscles, which in turn could help you gain muscle. F.Y.I. the ones I each only have 1 gram of trans fat each.

"avec buns"? there's a phrase to use in everyday conversation :D

there's dozens of better protein sources out there. almost almost heavily processed meats have more of everything nasty in them, including nitrates. should stay away from processed lunchmeats, too.

google 'hot dogs nitrates' (w/o quotes)

How about turkey dogs + chicken dogs? Are they just as bad?

ONLY 1g trans fat? You shouldn't be consuming any trans fat, bar the small amounts found naturally in food like CLA, if you truly value your health.

trans fats are an artificial fat that result from processing vegetable oils in such a way as to make them solid at room temperate (this is how Crisco and margarine are made). partial hydrogenation creates these trans fats that occur only in trace amounts in nature, and it turns out that they're probably about the worst sort of fat you can consume, particularly for heart health.
