Afternoon Gentleman, I have a nice spot in my basement where I would like to put a home gym, I'm not trying to get ripped, I already have a pretty good physique naturally, I'd just like to add some muscle.

Are home gyms any good, does anyone use one and can make a recommendation?

I've never been a fan of home gyms because you're normally pretty restricted in the amount of weight/equipment you can have. That being said aim to have the following:

- free weights and a good olympic bar
(Have at least 8 x 45 lb plates, 2 25's, 2 10's, and 2 5's. Also have pairs of dumbells: 10's, 20's, 30's, 40's, 60's, 80's, 100's)
- a good squat rack w/ a chin up bar
- a bench
- a dip station
- a weight belt
- a mat/some kind of pressure/force absorbing surface that you can drop weight if you need to.

That's pretty much it.

I have a great home gym setup. The biggest concern I have is safety when benching. I have a bench press called a "Powertec" strength. It works great. Get a barbell with a bunch of plates. Kettlebells and assorted dumbells. My home gym is for Muscle building. If you want to lose the gut....I feel that some kind of cardio class at a gym is soooooooooooooo much better than training alone because you are naturally pushed to go harder due to peer preasure.

If you're handy you can build yourself a squat rack which can be used as a dip station and bench press (you need one of those adjustable benches).

Home Gyms are always good. As you can train whenever you got free time.

When i first started lifting and didnt have access to a gym. All i had at home was a curl bar and a couple dumbbells. I was still able to do some great exercises....

Shoulder Press (behind the neck)
Push Ups - Great for chest if you cant Bench Press, Cable Flyes also work great
Bent Over Barbell Rows
Arm Curls
Tricep EXtensions
Wrist Curls
Squats
Standing Calf Raises (Use a book to stand on.) OR Seated Calf Raises (Lay barbell across your thighs.)
Sit Ups

I'm sure theres some good local prices for old rusty weight equipment on Craigslist. Don't worry, your muscles dont care what the weights look like.. Though after a while a GYM can add more variety and weight.

I would kill to have a home gym. All you really need is a rack, barbell, plates, an adjustable bench, and one of those doorway pull up bars, and you're good to go. If you train alone, a set of sawhorses to spot you would be a good idea. I would do this if I had the space.

I purchased a cheap sit up bench (£15) but mostly use this for decline sets. Decline skull crushers is a personal favourite :) - Also no need for a spotter, if you fail you can just rest rest the barbell of the floor behind you.

My pullup/dip station consists of a gurder and two tables.
