I have had a hernia for like a year and a half now and its now bad enough to wear I pretty much have to keep my hand in my pocket to hold my guts in. It sucks.

When I get the operation, how long will I be out of commission? I was planning on having it on a Friday night, resting over the weekend and still being able to make it to work monday where I just have to sit at a desk.

What should I expect realistically?

you might be able to do that but it may be a good idea to rest a couple of weeks after the operation. is it a inguinal hernia?

I had an operation for a hernia when I was like 5 years old. My belly button stuck out like a march mallow before the surgery.

I don't remember if it was painful, because I was circumsized during the same hernia operation. My mind was focused on the penis discomfort more than the stomach. :p

I don't remember it being too bad, though.

I had the operation almost a year ago after dealing with the hernia for about 10 years (don't ask why, it had only been a nuisance). I had the operation on Friday and felt great afterward, then the meds wore off. I took one more dose and got sick because the meds were EXTREMELY strong. I was hobbling around on Saturday and into Sunday without the meds.

I went to work on Monday and got around pretty well for the next couple of weeks with limited lifting however I did a lot of walking per the doctors orders. Close to the end of the second week I starting training on my Lifecycle and about a month later I rode my bike in the Minnesota Ironman. :D

In a nutshell, take it easy the first few days just to get your bearing and change your bandages often. Keep moving if you can especially if you can keep the meds down. If you are in relatively good health you will be able to bounce back pretty easily.
