During the course of normal conversations with family and friends, I have a tendency to jumble words and to make long pauses in my sentences. Sometimes I use wrong tenses and mix up my pronouns. I dont think anyone conciously notices but its still very embarrising when I completely screw up what I am trying to articulate. Could this be a sign of a speech impediment?

Not speech at all. It's a deep fear. You know, the ones that you have been making excuses about your entire life...

You have to go out, and conciously practice KNOWING WHAT YOU ARE SAYING!!!

Don't try to look smart with your words, EVER, people prefer honesty. When you try to explain something to somebody, or when you are talking to friends... ADMIT TO YOURSELF(out loud, or with your inside your head voice) that you don't know what to say. Yeah, that doesn't sound right, but that's my articulating.

Just say whatever comes to mind, don't wait for a new word, embrace your freudian sliponics.

Me, too

I do the same kinds of things now and again—as, I'm sure, every honest person will admit.

What helps me most is stretching my face beforehand if I know I'm about to talk. I'll make faces (the wilder the better), grimace, pucker, and get the face muscles moved around for a minute or two. Try it out, tell me if it works as well for you as it does for me.

I learned this from a girl who learned if from a Shakespeare/acting camp. Apparently, actors have done this for hundreds of years in order to avoid just the types of things you mentioned.

I had issues with articulation too :). Maybe abit different to yours but the how i fixed it might offer some advice. I didn't start talking till after my 5th birthday.

- When reading for fun or study, speak out loud every second passage.
-Take up a foreign language, this will force you to have the sentence in advance before speaking which helps with thought to vocal process'
- if you use msn, stop and pick up the phone.

Btw, i'm not sure how you Americans do it but your incredibly articulate. Some of the stuff you guys spit out without any planning truly astounds me. Maybe television related?

best remedy is to join a toastmasters club....it's free and it's really useful....it's basically a club where you get together and practice public speaking....you meet some really interesting people there

If you want to talk, talk to your friends. If you want a girl to like you, listen to her, ask questions, and act like you are on the edge of your seat.
