I've got surgery scheduled for next month. I'd like to know how the experience went for those of you that have gotten your wisdom teeth out already :).

I got all 4 of mine yanked out at once. I loaded up on plenty of pain killers like Lortab, and it still felt like someone hit me in the mouth with a 2X4 and the pain wouldn't go away. It sucked. Like a motha. Make sure someone can drive you home, and clear your schedule for about a week.

Now I hope you're looking forward to it!

Don't worry about it, I've had almost $20000 worth of dental work done on me and getting your wisdom teeth pulled isn't that bad. In fact when I got mine pulled they also put in two screws in my mouth. Those were the first stage of me getting tooth implants, because there I was missing 4 adult teeth (gentic thing I guess). And even after all that it still wasn't very painful. Just go easy on the pain pills, only use them if you have pain, the pharmacy has enough drug addicts to deal with as it is.

Warning, graphic post, procede with caution.

Yay for sleeping for 24 hours!

Uhm, mine was pretty bad. I couldn't eat anything but yogurt because if my wounds were bleeding hardcore and i kept swallowing blood, so i had to throw up like 4 times. It was not fun. Plus my mom was concerned that my painkillers were making me sick, so I had to live off of advil. Let me tell you, advil is not as good as perscription painkillers. I was in hell.

All and all though, It wasn't THAT bad because I slept for so long, but it just hurts to eat anything for like 4 days.

Let me give you a piece of advice. CLEAN YOUR WOUNDS GOOD for at least 20 days.

Don't eat anything they tell you not to for like 20 days, like i ate some corn, and a piece got lodged in my wound, then it made my face swell up like crazy and hurt like hell. I had to go in, and they stabbed it with the f*cking mirror and needles to drain the puss out. It was this yellow nasty **** that looks like dijon mustard. Not fun.

its not nearly as bad as you think it is. i had mine done 4 years ago and my brother did his this past summer. i was in bed for like 2 days eating frozen milkshakes with a spoon and sleeping. after thso 2 days i just stayed inside, watched TV/played computer all day for 3 days then I was fine.

my brother was in bed for a day and relaxed for like a week and he was fine as well. his face was swollen a lot longer than mine was though. maybe 4-5 days.

just follow the doctors instructions and you'll be fine. BE SURE TO RINSE WITH THE PEROXIDE SOLUTION! getting those cavities infects is gruesome and painful!!!

I had two taken out about 5 months ago, and pretty soon I will have to go back to get the other two done.

My top wisdom tooth actually came out no problem. My bottom wisdom tooth on the other hand needed at least three types anestetic before it could be pulled out, and even then I felt a twinge of pain. For me the worst part isnt the needle, its the pulling and crunching sounds you hear while the tooth is being yanked out.

All I can recommend for you is:

FROZEN BLUEBERRIES

They are small, cold and fit neatly along your gums. When I had gum surgery they worked GREAT. Perhaps they will help you as well.

Thank you for the posts.

I figure that if medieval man could handle an extra tooth or four, I can too.

I mean... my gag reflex is so strong, I gag majorly when I get a filling. WTF will I do with people reaching right into the back of my mouth to yank out a bone?

If they're doing that for me, they'll be putting me under until it's done. Thats the only way it's gonna be done for me.

Yea, thanks tons for your stories; I just woke up you bastards!. JK, i appreciate it. I've gotten surgery done in the hospital before, so I understand how terrible the experience can be.

My main concern is the recovery period - Does it really take that long? This is either gonna overlap with part of thanksgiving or part of christmas for sure. I was planning activities with my girlfriend as well as planning to wrap up a ton of schoolwork, and I would be killed if I had to sit in bed all day. Oh man, 3-5 days? :(

Just because a woman listens to you and acts interested in what you say doesn't mean she really is. She might just be acting polite, while silently wishing that the date would hurry up and end, or that you would go away... and never come back.

I think I had an experience like yours, Sazuki. Maybe that's why it was so bad for me-because they had to drill into my jaw.

I'm afraid that recovery will take a couple days, at the least. It will probably screw with your plans pretty good.

Be optimistic about this, though-it can be a great opportunity to lose a little weight, especially right before the holidays! And think of all the sympathy you can garner. Milk it for all that it's worth! :D

Some Professional Advice.

Recovery time after extractions will depend on many factors. Age, gender, smoking, healing ability, etc.

The most important factor is how the teeth have erupted in your mouth.

Wisdom teeth can come in fully erupted, partially erupted, or impacted.

Fully erupted wisdom teeth are generally easier to extract. These are the wisdom teeth that you generally feel no pain while they are in your mouth. During and extraction, they pretty much "POP" out and require very little recovery time. Usually a Friday procedure will have you up and about Sundayish and ready for work or school by Monday.

Partially erupted teeth happens when part of the biting surface is exposed, and the other part is covered by gum tissue. Partially erupted wisdom teeth are usually the instances where most people feel pain in their back molars because they are pretty much biting down on their gums when eating. The tissue gets inflammed and bacteria lodge underneath that gumline causing more inflammation and sensitivity. In partially erupted teeth, the extractions are typically similar to the fully erupted teeth. Recovery/discomfort time is similar. Healing may take a bit longer due to the tissue that overlays the wisdom tooth maybe a bit more inflammed.

Impacted Teeth are when the wisdom tooth is in a direction pushing against the adjactent tooth. Some people may or may not experience any pain while these teeth are in the mouth. Some impacted teeth are sideways, lodged in the jaw bone, and not even erupted in the mouth. Depending on the direction of impaction, many dentists or oral surgeons elect to leave the tooth alone. However, if the impacted tooth is pushing against another tooth causing trauma to that adjacent tooth..or...if the impaction is causing the teeth to crowd or shift..that tooth has to go. This is where you will usually end up at an oral surgeon and get put to sleep while the procedure is done. Depending if the tooth is in bone, then drilling of the jaw is required. Its not fun, and this is where longer and more difficult recovery times come.

My advice....Ask your dentist or oral surgeon which type of teeth are in eruption - fully erupted, partially, or impacted. And he/she will be your best source of information.

Regardless, stay away from things that will hinder healing time. Smoking, drinking alcohol, marijuana, street drugs, etc will slow healing time.

And remember...ITS YOUR MOUTH...ITS YOUR HEALTH...

Too many patients just open their mouths and say AHHHH without knowing what a procedure entails. Ask as many questions as you need to feel comfortable about your procedure. All the guys on here who have had their wisdom teeth extracted have no knowledge to your specific case better than your medical professional.

Get knocked out for the procedure, and then ask for lots of drugs afterwords. It's pretty cool.

OMG, dude, I had this done a couple of weeks ago and let me tell u, IT WAS THE WORST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE!!! Read on.....

I have been in the ring boxing for years and years, so I am used to pain, infact pain usually doesnt bother me whatsoever, but this, OMG!!!

haha, but dont get scared, the wisdom teeth were nothing. I had a real bad infection in my mouth (caused by me not going to the dentist whilst my wisdom teeth were growing crooked into my cheecks and under my moulers), lol, I am an idiot!! The infection got so bad I could not close my teeth, I was throwing up everywhere and it was hitting all my nerves, so I had the most unbearable pain throughout my back, my right eye and my right temple for about a week and a half. It is still there, but the infection is going down, I can now eat and the pain is subsiding considerably!! Man, I never knew what nerve pain felt like, but its pain like no other!!!!! Getting ur wisdom teeth out is nothing compared to that!! So dont worry, lol, sorry to get u worried at the start of the post!

-HPNOTIQ-, I think mine were impacted. As the dentist had to drill extract part of the jawbone to get one of them out, it was sidewards, he showed me the xrays. I asked him about getting it done at an oral surgeon and he said, naaa, I can do it. Man, the guy nearly killed me! Took him an hour and a half and 8 injections for ONE tooth! Its the first time I went to him cause the pain was already pretty bad and I needed an urgent appointment, of which I coudlnt get at my regular dentist!

all these negative posts, I almost enjoyed getting my wisdom teeth pulled they gave me lots of valium before the surgery then a good amount of pain killers after, as long as you have nothing to do for a couple days you will be fine.
