Some Professional Advice.
Recovery time after extractions will depend on many factors. Age, gender, smoking, healing ability, etc.
The most important factor is how the teeth have erupted in your mouth.
Wisdom teeth can come in fully erupted, partially erupted, or impacted.
Fully erupted wisdom teeth are generally easier to extract. These are the wisdom teeth that you generally feel no pain while they are in your mouth. During and extraction, they pretty much "POP" out and require very little recovery time. Usually a Friday procedure will have you up and about Sundayish and ready for work or school by Monday.
Partially erupted teeth happens when part of the biting surface is exposed, and the other part is covered by gum tissue. Partially erupted wisdom teeth are usually the instances where most people feel pain in their back molars because they are pretty much biting down on their gums when eating. The tissue gets inflammed and bacteria lodge underneath that gumline causing more inflammation and sensitivity. In partially erupted teeth, the extractions are typically similar to the fully erupted teeth. Recovery/discomfort time is similar. Healing may take a bit longer due to the tissue that overlays the wisdom tooth maybe a bit more inflammed.
Impacted Teeth are when the wisdom tooth is in a direction pushing against the adjactent tooth. Some people may or may not experience any pain while these teeth are in the mouth. Some impacted teeth are sideways, lodged in the jaw bone, and not even erupted in the mouth. Depending on the direction of impaction, many dentists or oral surgeons elect to leave the tooth alone. However, if the impacted tooth is pushing against another tooth causing trauma to that adjacent tooth..or...if the impaction is causing the teeth to crowd or shift..that tooth has to go. This is where you will usually end up at an oral surgeon and get put to sleep while the procedure is done. Depending if the tooth is in bone, then drilling of the jaw is required. Its not fun, and this is where longer and more difficult recovery times come.
My advice....Ask your dentist or oral surgeon which type of teeth are in eruption - fully erupted, partially, or impacted. And he/she will be your best source of information.
Regardless, stay away from things that will hinder healing time. Smoking, drinking alcohol, marijuana, street drugs, etc will slow healing time.
And remember...ITS YOUR MOUTH...ITS YOUR HEALTH...
Too many patients just open their mouths and say AHHHH without knowing what a procedure entails. Ask as many questions as you need to feel comfortable about your procedure. All the guys on here who have had their wisdom teeth extracted have no knowledge to your specific case better than your medical professional.
