Hi im not a stranger to this forum, but this is my first time posting in this section. I'm gonna get my head out of the "AFC-Land" of the DJ forum and focus on improving myself through building wealth and getting fit.

Anyways, to my question...

I have a problem with motivation to work out and finding my intensity during the set. I used to use energy drinks to try to help me and it worked great, but pretty much only temporarily. I think my problem is mainly mental.

Right now im looking into meditation and more specifically the aspect of it where you learn to manage pain and see if I can use it in my set to achieve better tolerance--Not to mention other mind power techniques.

Any suggestions are welcome.

If you need energy drinks to go all out in the gym then your diet is possibly lacking in carbs.

Yes, the mindset does play a part but even the most determined lifter can't operate if he's not feeding the machine.

What's your eating like?

Maybe some of my experience will help you.

I find that I dislike to actually start going to the gym, literally I hate going to the gym: I have to get my bag, drive... walk...feeling cold on the way... it seems very pointless to me.
I do not enjoy the trip to the gym at all. And this somehow reduces my overall desire to work out since before working out I will have to get up and go to the gym.

But it works like magic: once I am in the gym, it is a complete reverse: I feel I want to work out! They have a perfect temperature there and every time I see the gym I want to work out. It worked for me every single time!
My desire to work out magically appears right in the gym!

But it mysteriosuly dissapear when I come home. I don't see anything that inspires me and I'll have to actually gooo... to the gym. This for some strange reasons decrease my inspiration.

How do I deal with it? I figured out I don't have to. I simply do not care, pretend I do not care about the gym while I am on my way to the gym. I simply go and do not think about working out.
Once I am in the gym, it feel perfectly ready to work out.

So maybe there is something that deters you from working out?
It might something you simply didn't notice: eating too much... eating too before working out, not eating enough before working out, dislike the gym, dislike going to the gym etc etc.
Try to figure this out for yourself first.

Regarding intensity: again, maybe it works only for me, but sometimes a couple of minutes of running on a treadmill before a workout helps me a lot. Not walking, but running (at least 6-7 speed on a treadmill).
It sets a higher rhythm for me, i.e. higher intensity.

I usually lift about 40-50 minutes at a time...training one or two muscles in a session--I started to read about Max OT and am gonna try to go by those principles (4-6 reps; 6-9 sets; 40 min. workouts).

As for my diet, I cant really say that I eat well--but I try to. I usually eat 3 times a day, and I try to load it with alot of protein. I drink an Isopure shake after my workout and then try to eat about an hour after that.

As far as what I eat...I usually make a ham and cheese omellete in the morning (3-4 eggs), whatever lunch I can get (if im working that day), and for dinner usually chicken breast, pasta...steak occasionally.

I think its fair to say though that im not eating alot of carbs in general.

What types of carbs, how much, and how often would you suggest?

Low GI carbs to keep bloodsugar and energy levels constant: oats, brown/basmati rice, wholemeal pasta/bread, yams, potatoes (high GI but I find them very sustaining personally).

How much depends on the sort of day you have - if you're very active have bigger portions.

You should be eating full meals (protein+carbs or protein+fats) 5-6 times a day anyway, so that's how often you should be eating - the last meal of the day should be just lean protein and veg/salad and maybe make your carb/fat cutoff earlier to avoid bodyfat gain.

I see a lack of pre-workout nutrition in your diet, which is very important.
