No matter how slick we think we might be, remember, young men (even younger than 18) got a letter in the mail one day telling them to report for duty, and they went. Many of them never came back. Even if you get nervous, approach in their honor.

True. I got my draft registration card 6 months ago when I turned 18.

I bet a lot of people would go AWOL today. Even worse than Vietnam protesters.
Yes, which is why the government doesn't use the draft any more. Conscripted soldiers are like slave labor - they don't want to be there, so the quality of work you get out of them is very low. The modern approach to military recruiting is to focus on the poorest people and immigrants, wave a decent job and some college money in their face, and get voluntary recruits that way.

There are so many young people without a job right now that it is actually difficult to get into the military. It took my cousin six months. He's 22, with a completely clean background, and wanted to go US Army Infantry, the most common grunt job there is. And that took six months. It used to be more like six hours. The Army doesn't need a draft when the job market is so sh!tty that there are no other jobs.
