I work weekdays 9 to 5 and feel so drained after work and cannot do anything and basically have to go to bed by 10:30 and wake up around 7:15am. The nature of my work is IT where there's constant interruption, noise, requests and deadlines to meet. But I am fine during the weekends where I get to stay home and usually do a lot of work and never feel any tiredness. I'm married and I don't go to gym; I don't think I will ever have time for it.

I am usually active during the day. Main staple is cereal/milk, rice with vege+meat and rice at night as well. I am not over-weight. I think I am under-weight for my age - weighing around 132 pounds or 60 kilograms.

Is there any other way I can get rid of my tiredness and feel fresh? I tried drinking lots of water during the day, shower after work, taking a 10 minutes walk during lunch but I don't feel as fresh and relaxed as I do when I stay home. Should I give up sugar or coffee/tea? I don't drink coke.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks.

So long as this is your lifestyle, you will always suffer from lethargy.

First and foremost, you have to start exercising. You don't have to become a bodybuilder, marathon runner, or elite athlete, but you do need to work out with at least a low or moderate intensity 5-7 times per week. I emphasize 5-7 workouts because the nature of your profession creates a particularly sedentary daily routine. If you don't start exercising with this frequency, your body will continue to suffer the effects of chronic stress, general fatigue, and a host of other ailments resulting from physical inactivity.

Secondly, you need to get a grip on the stress components of your career. I'm sure you expend a tremendous amount of mental energy in your work. Combined with the pressure of heavy economic expectations, work for many is a crippling stress ****tail. Is there anything that you can do to improve the ways in which you manage your workload? I'm sure there is. Try to come up with ways you can delegate and automate your less profitable activities. Also, is there anything you can do to improve your working environment? For example, could your office be more ergonomically efficient? How are the lighting conditions and temperature? You may dismiss the significance of this question as an IT pro, but how does your work environment make you feel?

On a psychological level, do you enjoy your work? How would you describe your marriage? Are you satisfied with the direction and level of control you have over your current life circumstances? Based on the general info you gave us, these are all potential spheres of your life where there may be a limiting factor undermining your vitality. Take inventory and see if you can identify any of these factors.

I would give up on sugar as you had suggested....every minor detail is important in the long run.....especially exercise.....even if it is 15 minutes a day.....may make a difference. Also check to make sure you don't have a condition called Chronic fatigue syndrome. You can also look into supplements that may help later on....good luck

sometimes it just that some of us work at places that can really really suck.
i mean you wake up and life is good, and you go off to the job feeling life is good, but after working so hard all day, and sometimes when the job tends to suck, all we want to do is go home and veg.
so do it.
go home and get in your comfy shorts, kick back on the couch with something to drink and something to snack on and veg for at least an hour.
call it your down time.
dont answer the phone.
just chill.
when an hour is over, get up!
hop in the shower or whatever.
do your chores, go to the gym, go catch a movie, whatever!
in a week, you will love your one hour break from it all and things will start feeling ok thru the day again, knowing you got that one hour break waiting on you when you get home.

@ op...

I too felt the same while working IT/Tech/Van Driver. Everything suffered, including my sex life. I wouldn't even jerk off every day.

Problem was that I had to suck up and be a nice boy while inside I wanted to rip sh1t up. I was depressed from my work.

Exercise and entertinment is a definitive way to snap out of that.

You should, however, watch that you do your job to the best (or else you quit).. In a situation like this you might tend to cut short cuts and be careless, screw up on porpose, etc.. Rather that go that route, if you wish find a new job now..

Sometimes people you with make a big difference, you want that alpha status, and if you didn't have it from the get go you won't get it.

I'm biking right now, cycling. If I knew this before I'd tell myself to bike to and from work.. It's such a moral booster.

One thing that may help the tiredness is a powernap of about 15-30min when you get home from work.

Also dont overheat during the day, its better to be slightly cool than warm.

I work a twelve hour shift. Come home and work out for two hours. I usually workout every other day.

As someone mentioned, a quick powernap here or there for fifteen minutes throughout the day helps me a lot.

I do take a pre-workout caffeine drink though. But I'm usually jazzed to work out, so I don't use the caffeine to keep me awake - just to get me even more amped.

I have the tiredness happen, and sometimes I cant avoid it. I bust my arse so hard that I am literally beat. NOW... For me, that hardest thing is, if I work, I have to be cautious as to not really sleep because then my body goes into this whole jell-o mode and then I am so relaxed it is hard to get moving again. Sometimes i'll just keep being active, go to work, be active (I have to at my job) and then let it all go when I go to bed.

Today was only arm day, but I just got real tired. I was studying and kind of dozed off. I always get 8hrs of sleep, but sometimes it happens.

Its one of those tired days today, and i'll be going to bed in a minute just cause i'm tired. Doesn't happen all the time, but when it does I get hosed.

Your diet is crap. As always it comes down to that. How can sugary cereal possibly fuel you through the day? Rice? White probably. Not the best energy sustaining choices.

My real advice is get out. Married and work 5 days a week and then work all weekend? To hell with that. No time to go to the gym? Does your wife not let you? (pfft) Look into a new career.

But you won't. You'll just stay in the rut. Good luck with that.

No he won't! There's a raise coming within the next two years!

But yeah, as ruckus here said... You decide how you live your life. It's good that you aren't happy with this lethargy, most people think it's normal and part of living. Well, it isn't. It's part of living an unhealthy life, sure, but...

Try cleaning up your diet and focusing on unprocessed, fresh foods. You know, natural stuff.

Drink green tea(no sugar) instead of tea and coffee. You say you're drinking " a lot" of water per day.... How much is a lot, to you?

After work, go for a 2-4 mile bike ride with the wife. Bike to a restaurant, eat, and come back. You'll feel refreshed. Even bike through a park, have a picnic or a nap on the grass, and bike back.

Be creative, use the brain muscle toward your happiness, and break up the tedium of your day.

As somebody else suggested, go for a bike ride in the morning, it'll pump your metabolism up for the day and keep you feeling fresh.

Be creative man.
---------
As an example, in the morning where I live, every tuesday and thursday I strap a backpack on with a small snack ,some water, and my laptop and climb the stairs of my building to the rooftop patio(30 story climb).

By then I'm huffing and puffing, I get to check the news and catch up on the daily events, sit with the sun on my back with a cool breeze, check my calendar, to do lists, delete some spam off the forums, play a game of chess or two, check emails, etc, read some jokes, etc.. After about 10 or 15 minutes I take the elevator back down to my place and cook breakfast(6 whole eggs, 1 cup of oatmeal, an apple, a protein shake with milk, supplements, and a glass of water.)

Then I have a shower, dress and head out.

That adds up to about 1.5h of time, from waking up, to leaving my place.

If you ask me, that's a great start to the day.

Again, be creative and think up fun and interesting things to do with your mornings. Heck, sit down on sunday and plan out everything you're going to do each morning. Mix things up, try new things, go different places, etc. (monday = bike to new spot in town. tuesday = visit new coffee shop for breakfast. wednesday = wake up extra early and find a pool to swim in. thursday = shoot some hoops on a bball court. friday = sleep in till the last possible second!

Include the wife in all this as well, it'll take your relationship to the next level, and having her on your side is like having another player on Team You!

Yeah I didnt see your diet. cereal should NOT be part of your diet unless you make it a cheat day.

My breakfast usually consists (if its not eggs) of a packet of Kashi Vanilla oatmeal, 1/2 scoop protein, 2oz milk just to mix it, and then 1Tbsp Natural PB. I then have a glass of OJ with green/white tea in it. THE POWDER, and then a banana or something.

If your under-weight, you might look at the diet. I'm not heavy, but i'm not tall either, so its a balance. One poster was 140 at 6', and that needs some work.

I would change things up to figure out why your tired. Maybe you cram so many carbs in or wrong carbs your insulin spikes, then hits bottom and you feel crappy. Maybe you are bored so you feel tired. Cant say, but mine are not all the time.

Like today and tomorrow, i'll prob be fine. Tomorow i'll get up at 7am, eat, eat some more, move around, and then by 9:30am off to the gym. Come back at close to 11am, do some studying, make lunch, do some more studying, then get read for work, then work (physical job, NOT desk) get home at 10pm or 11pm, go to bed and then wake up again.

I usually have energy that whole time and not tired one bit. I keep my self hydrated at work, I munch on almonds, a protein bar, some carbs, etc etc. And even with a hard night i'll go home all ready to run a marathon.

My days are usually like this regardless. My tired days are rare, and dont happen like I said all the time.

I'll tell you one thing that helps me... I work with some cute girls, so i'm always like... I get to see a nice piece of arse tonight. :D So when I go in to work i'm always in a good mood, and it just helps. Plus I get to have fun and work with great people.

Just sit down and try and figure out things.

Ok, not ALL are bad, but he shouldn't be eating cereal all the time anyway. Now if you eat a bowl of grape nuts, some skim milk, an apple, glass of OJ, great, or even total. You can eat chex, and its fine, but the reason most of us dont eat it, is that it isn't enough calories when you have been fasting all night.

Rice Krispies... Great, but what does a 100cal bowl or cereal do for you? Prob is, most people eat just that, and have a coffee, and half an apple if even that.

EAT BREAKFAST! The cereal may suffice for a 5yr old or small hamster, but not most of us. I eat a power packed breakfast because I know how long I have been sleeping and the lack of nutrients. In fact I had 9.5hrs of sleep last night, and a bowl of Rice Krispies sure doesn't cut it. I do Grape Nuts some times cause its a great carb meal, but I always eat to at least put down close to 800cal for breakfast.

You walk out the door with cereal in your gut and coffee and dont eat again till lunch, you should be a zombie by time your ready for lunch.
