Freek's Review: 48 Laws of Power - Robert Greene

Book Title: 48 Laws of Power

Author: Robert Greene

Price: $17.00 US $25.50 Canada (on back of book)

Pages: 430 of reading, 452 with index

Reading Difficulty: I found it a rather simple read, with a few words that I had to look up. I'm 15, most of you shouldn't have a hard time at all.

How Relates to DJ'ing: There a quite a few principles or "Laws" that can relate directly to persuing a woman. Take for example Law #3: Conceal Your Intentions. By not letting your intentions be known, you reserve the upper hand in most situations, including getting the chick.

Summary: The book basically gives you 48 of the best principles to follow in order to increase your success in climbing the ladder of power.

Review
Positive: I found many of the laws helpful, not only in DJ'ing but in everyday life as well.
Negative: Could get to be rather lengthy at times.
Overall: I feel this could be a good read. If it doesn't help you with your pimpness, you could always use them to improve the quality of your life.

Importance: It depends on your outlook. I think this book is a rather important tool because of the wide array of principles that it throws your way. Not only does it show you some mind games, but it gives many examples of what not to do, what to do, and when not to use the law in question.

Rating ?/10: I'll give this book about 8/10. The length tended to get to me at times, and on the parts where it explains when not to use the law, it was vague at times. Other than that, the book was written quite well.

Very fancy writing, vague as hell so you can't apply a thing. The book is pretty useless and anyone who beg to differ, tell me one thing that this book has changed in your life. It's just theory with no relevent examples on how to implement the stuff in it (as if you'd want that!), that statement include "The art of seduction".

If you think the book is great, hey, you'll get over it ;)

Most definetely.

Some people try to find answers, tell them exactly what to do instead of looking for tips, a guide.

This book will guide you with what you want to do. In my social experiences i have witnessed all of the laws i've read thus far practiced subconciously by people in an attempt to gain more power.

Read the book and make your own oppinions. Don't expect the book to teach you situation by situation, but use it as a guide to model your life.

What do you expect to learn from this book?

In general I believe this book to give you power if you follow all the laws. I also believe that power gained in those ways will not have a positive impact upon your life since many of the laws will destroy quite a few valuable things in life. You'll become rotten to the core, a paranoid bastard with no compassion for any person.

In the end it all comes down to: Will you sacrifice friendship, spontanity and happiness in order to build a facade of a fake-you to become powerful?

Yeah, it has a more DJ approach to it. However it really complicate stuff to much. Too many things to think about. Conceal intentions, hurt the person so they become vurnerable, create illusions... way too much work. The time plotting all that could be better spent on something else. The fun and the spontanity of getting someone to like you also disappear, it become nothing more than cold calculation! THAT SUCK!

All you need to know and not giving a damn about calculation can be found in the legacy of Anti-dump.

I wouldnt buy it. I prefer to check books out from the library since i read em only once. And if you don't like the book, its all a matter of opinion. I found that "never reveal your intentions" among others to be useful.

Tell her a little about yourself, but not too much. Maintain some mystery. Give her something to think about and wonder about when she's at home.

Im currently reading this book. Its not gonna give ya the key to life or a template. What it does is present 48 laws, examples of these laws using a historical context, consequences of these laws, and reversials.

Its a long book, if u read it like a novel. I suggest jumping around the book and readin' the things that most interest u and then reading the less interesting parts.

I dont believe that a book can make u parinoid.

Read and enjoy it for what it is

Iagree with the 8 out of 10 rating...

this book is req by many business schools.

48 Laws of Power is a fantastic book. I really like how it gives historical examples of the laws, it's not just concept and theory.

This book is interesting, BUT there's a better one.

THE ART OF SEDUCTION by the same author.

Jesus Christ, it's freaking gold! I have the audio version and its contents blow the Dj Bible up!

This Robert Greene is a monster. :D

Unfortunately both books were interesting but I ended up even more clueless.

I like something that says do abc and you will get xyz.

Basically the style gives 'laws' based on one strategy, then in another chapter another 'law' which totally is the opposite approach to the previous one.

All it does prove is there's more than one way to skin a cat, just don't start the skinning one way then another.

Personally, I've observed the laws acting out in my life. Its a pretty good depiction of real power games.

And as for lifeforce's comments about how applying them would only do you harm...
You don't necessarily have to apply them yourself. But its good to be able to understand whats going on when others do.

If you guys liked this book then you should really read Sun Tzu's The Art of War. It's a really paractical guide that conditions your mind much like the 48 laws.

I actually found The Art of War to be more helpful because it gets you in a state of mental preparation, that helps in all sorts of engagements as well as dealing with everyday life's unexpected twist.

I also saw a book called "Sun Tzu Was a Sissy : Conquer Your Enemies, Promote Your Friends, and Wage the Real Art of War
" should I read that instead???? or is that B.S?

hehe i brought this up in my Operations Management class when I was in college after the professor told me to read the Art of War. Of course I hadn't read either book at that time so I was just joking. He told me the fallisices of Sun Tzu Was a Sissy, especially in terms of the corporate world and how it works which is what it tries to promote anyway.

So no that book is way off base, even in the primary message it promotes.

I've got a question about a folktale found in the margins of Law 2: Never put too much trust in friends, learn how to use enemies. The folktale's name is "The Snake, the Farmer and the Heron"

A snake chased by hunters asked a farmer to save its life. To hide it from its pursuers, the farmer squatted and let the snake crawl into his belly. But when the danger had passed and the farmer asked the snake to come out, the snake refused. It was warm and safe inside. On his way home, the man saw a heron and went up to him and whispered what had happened. The heron told him to squat and strain to eject the snake. When the snake stuck its head out, the heron caught it, pulled it out, and killed it. The farmer was worried that the snake poison might still be inside him. The heron told him that the cure for snake poison was to cook and eat six white fowl. "You’re a white fowl", said the farmer. "You'll do for a start." He grabbed the heron, put it in a bag, and carried it home where he hung it up while he told his wife what had happened. "I'm surprised at you", said the wife. "The bird does you a kindness, rids you of the evil in your belly, saves your life in fact, yet you catch it and talk of killing it." She immediately released the heron and it flew away. But on its way, it gouged out her eyes.

Moral: When you see water flowing uphill, it means that someone is repaying a kindness.
I really don't understand this at all. What does "When you see water flowing uphill" mean? Is this saying that you shouldn't try to help your friends, because they don't care and will strike you nonetheless?

It means that people will repay kindness "when pigs fly" or "Hell freezes over" - in other words, never.

Although I don't believe that to be true.
