You want to flex the muscles you are using during the workout, it is beneficial to blood flow, and the more isometric tension they recieve, the harder they look when you aren't flexing, or they sort of are constantly flexed.
Arnold talks a lot about this in the "Modern Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding" book (which IMHO is the best bodybuilding book ever). If it's good enough for Arnold, it's good enough for me.
