Martha Burk takes aim at NHL advertising

Women’s advocate says new ads disrespectful, offensive.

NEW YORK - Martha Burk is taking aim at the NHL’s newest television advertisement.

Burk, who led an unsuccessful effort to allow female members at Augusta National three years ago, called the ad “gratuitous” because it shows a scantily clad woman dressing a hockey player before he heads onto the ice.

Burk plans to send letters of protest to NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and **** Ebersol, chairman of NBC Universal Sports & Olympics. NBC is scheduled to run the ad next week.

The ad, shown Wednesday at The Museum of Television & Radio to the NHL’s corporate sponsors, is part of the “More Entertainment! More Passion! More Hockey!” campaign to launch the season that begins Oct. 5.

“Here the NHL is trying to portray itself as family entertainment,” Burk said, “and this ad doesn’t support that very well.”

The spot opens with a quote from Chinese military philosopher Sun Tzu: “A clever warrior is one who not only wins, but excels at winning with ease.” A bare-chested player sits on a wooden bench in the glow of a candlelit room with a backbeat of drums and rattling sabers. He is approached by a woman in a bra and gauzy robe, who touches his shoulders, asks “Ready?” and helps him put on his shoulder pads and jersey.

She says “It’s time,” and he heads to the ice to the cheers of a man and young boy in the stands. The ad ends with “My NHL, coming 10.05.”

NHL spokeswoman Bernadette Mansur said the ad is part of a five-part “Inside the Warrior” series produced for the NHL. It also appears on the league’s Web site.

“We’re surprised that Ms. Burk would come to that interpretation,” Mansur said. “This ad is very respectful of women. The woman is a spiritual and physical trainer for the warrior, and his mentor.”

Burk sees it differently.

“That’s a major stretch,” she said. “The woman is a sexual ornament, in my view.

“It’s appealing to adult men while trying to masquerade as something for kids. That’s deeply offensive to me. As a mother of two sons, they see enough sex and violence anyway. Why put it in warrior terms? That’s offensive, let alone the sexism.”
To view the Commercial go to: http://www.nhl.com and click on under My NHL where its says TV ad.

I think its a great commercial. Its about time men are portrayed like men and women like women. It would be a grave mistake for the NHL advertising if they listen to her feminist rant and change the commercial and make its PC like the rest of the commercials out there, where the man is an idiot and the woman is the smart one and in control.

They should let the market decide. If enough people complain they will take it off the air beacuse it's bad for buisness. If it is only a bunch of feminists who wouldn't be watching hokey anyways then screw um.

Things like this makes me think we need to rip apart the 19th amendment....

fellow djs, remember the brainwashing here. Are the feminists complaining about that Hor Paris Hilton giving women a bad name? NO, are they complaining about mtv and all the other crap making women look like hors? NO

They just can't stand anything that portrays normal/healthy heterosexual relationships between a man and a woman. It either has to be an average comercial you see on tv these days which makes men look like homer simpson type idiots while the woman is the clever one (turn on the tv for an hour you will see a bunch)

GOOD LORD FORBID YOU HAVE A COMERCIAL SHOWING A NATURAL HETEROSEXUAL RELATIONSHIP OF A MASCULINE MAN BEING TAKEN CARE OF BY A WOMAN!

All the advertisement posters that contain images of women at my college are often filled with feminist graffiti.

They should ask the national feminists association to pay for the cleaning costs.

The commercial was pretty cool in my opinion. Feminists need to realize NOT EVERYTHING is sexist.

I'm suprised they're making a fuss out of that and not the axe and tag spray commercials.

Hey while we're at it we should complain about bod spray commercials. Because it shows how chicks only want muscular guys.

Or we could, you know, get a life?

Yeah she should look into that one.

What are the things that she complains about? Sexism and "violence" Yeah it is the masculinity that they are attacking. They want men to look stupid. Why didn't they complain about that deodorant ad which showed a scantily clad woman, dressed in clubbing clothes moving her hips in a sexy way and showing beads of sweat in her flat (and pierced) tummy? Because the ad said "When she's hot, it's sexy.....when you're hot, you stink"

Guys realize that sports are the only thing that we as men still can rely on for some masculinity on display. God bless football and baseball and the other sports. When you go out on the field it is about all about manhood and masculinity. I think sports is the only way that men still get things like drama, excitement, dejection and so on. The rest of TV shows and movies are watered down testosterone with estrogen. The ad looked fine to me, though I can see why she'd get mad. But look at the ad above and tell me why she didn't get mad then?

Good for Ms. Burke. I'm glad she is taking a stand against the NHL. Give the league as much free publicity as you can.
