I like to approach this in a more humble manner and simply say "I bet you say that to every guy".

This all depends on your personality. Odds are they're taking your attitude and demeanor into account when they say that so whatever you're doing it's working.

If you're a funny guy, say something funny. If you're cool, say something cool. Sarcastic, sarcastic. You get the idea.

No offence as a man I don't want a girl telling me I am cute that word means pretty when a girls says it to a guy to me cute belongs to a kitten or a puppy...

I'd prefer a lady to say something like your very sexy, masculine or manly not cute..If a girl told me I was cute I would properly have a discussion about her choice of words I don't think I care to be seen as neutered in the eyes of the woman I am going to screw:D

"Cute" is just a safe word people use when flirting. If you bump into a girl at the grocery store and strike up a conversation she might mix in a your cute so you know she's attracted....It's a much safer word than sexy or stud Those other words make people think of sex lol

Guys call girls cute all the time when meeting first in public. Girl wont be offended if you say hey "Cutie etc.. sexy, hottie, etc thats a different story

Same thing for girls....Cute is just a safe word. Cute pretty much means handsome these days. Its a safe way for somebody to compliment you and show interest without going over the top using words like sexy, hottie etc

It doesn't matter how good-looking you are, how romantic you are, how funny you are... or anything else. If she doesn't have something INVESTED in you and the relationship, preferably quite a LOT invested, she'll dump you, without even the slightest hesitation, as soon as someone a little more "interesting" comes along.

I doubt if you bump into a girl at the grocery store she would say hey sexy or you masculine man LOL Unless she's a complete slut with a lot of jam

Most girls will use the word "Cute" since it's a safe word.

Look don't listen to anyone who tells you otherwise, just take it as a complement! If you don't have anything to say, how about "thanks"? I used to always be called cute, but I was too damn insecure about it and I couldn't see that these girls were INTERESTED in me. I was thinking the same as you "cute? what do they mean by cute?"

Hell I've been called 'pretty' by lots of girls. At first I was like WTF and you guys might come up with something like "oh you must be femenine, she thinks of you as a girlfriend". No, no, just no. Each one of these girls was interested in me. They thought I was 'hot' but a word like that is too up front. Maybe you aren't the 'hot sexy' guy but they are still interested. Just like how we can really like a cute girl but not see her as sexy. Semantics.

Just take it as a complement. If you are good at it try some c/f.

Look, from personal experience,

"cute" means good looking/not creepy.

It's a good thing - nothing "feminine about it.
like someone already mentioned, girls wont be calling random guys "sexy" - that would be weird.

Learn to take a compliment gracefully. Its a very masculine thing to do. And don't be afraid to return one now and again.

I don't think girls think too much about the connotations of words they use unless they are deliberately being nasty. In fact, the specific words girls use are often irrelevant. Girls primarily communicate feelings. If you want to really know what she means, try and learn to tap into the feelings she's communicating. "You're cute", to me at least, sounds like a compliment; she's communicating a feeling - that you're good looking - and is thus interested in you. Specific words don't matter. She could even compliment in item of your clothing. All irrelevant. It's the feelings she's feeling that matter.
