A graduate died in a head-on car crash while sending a text message, an inquest has heard. Tracy Wale was on her way to move into a flat with her partner when she drove on to the wrong side of the road and hit two cars.


Miss Wale, a criminology graduate, was about to start a job with Thames Valley Police when she died. The 22-year-old was described as ‘a much-loved daughter, sister and friend’, her family said in a statement.

‘She was always full of such vibrant energy and potential,’ they added. ‘It was a terrible accident with terrible consequences and there is no getting away from the fact using a mobile phone while driving can kill. If anything good can come out of the death of our daughter, we would urge people to switch off their phone before getting into a car.

Her phone was set to ‘text mode’ when it was found in her Vauxhall Astra after the crash on the A508 in Northamptonshire in April.

‘She may have been distracted by attempting to write a text message,’ PC Brian Johnson told the inquest.

Northampton coroner Anne Pember recorded a verdict of accidental death.

It used to be, don't talk on the phone and drive, but TEXT whilst driving, guys?

I tried to text once. It's almost impossible! I mean your eyes are not even on the road and your attention is on your phone. It's actually illegal in my state for anyone to text and drive. Texting while driving is a death wish. Your friends can wait for what ever you have to say. That's why texting is so awesome. You are not required to text back right away. Some people seem to forget that though. An instant response is not worth anyone life.

Not worth it. I drove past a totaled car about five months ago, surrounded by police cruisers and fire trucks. The smashed windshield was covered with a white sheet stained with blood. The outline of the body visible, limp lifeless female hand sticking out from under the sheet . Wasted life.

Texting is soooooo AFC, and texting while driving is the Darwinistic manifestation of a man being so AFC that he is unfit to survive.

I'm a road warrior at work, so, I see it ALL the time. Often I'll Count male/female cellphone-to-ear usage while out there. Women will be turning and WHIP their stupid as5 non-peripheral visioned head and eyes around in a gaze/daze probably talking about nothing worth mentioning in particular, and proceed to let their foots off the brake as I am coming clear down their lane causing me to brake and swerve. These are Old women just as well as young-uns.

I've counted consistently over the year, 7 out of 10 females on average with the phone stuck to their ears while driving (why not invest in a bluetooth headset?? BECAUSE THEY WANT TO BE NOTICED ON THE FVCKING PHONE attention-seeking slvts, young or Old). For men, it's 4 out of 10, yet again, probably more serious "worthy" talk about matters, but still probably unnecessary for 2 out of the 4 who do.

I'd imagine that if the econ got so bad that women couldn't afford their cellphone bill, they'd starve rather than give it up!

Right now I'm preparing my life for spinal surgery because a year ago last October 29th, a woman was either texting or dialing while driving and she slammed into my stopped vehicle at 40mph.

The result - 4 of my vertebrae were smashed and one disk was completely obliterated. Now it's bone-against bone.

I was sitting in my minivan at a red light, and I looked in the rear-view mirror and saw this woman bearing down on me with the phone right in front of her face. She got a new car out of it, and I got a lifetime of pain and drastically limited activity.

I actually learned in an engineering class you have to learn that the possible side effects of passing laws can have worse consequences. When seat belts were first instated fatalities also went up because people thought seat belts would make them invincible and they drove faster/more recklessly.

A lot of law makers give little credit to how people might abuse or try very hard to avoid laws in any way that they can.

I'm suing, but in New York State back injuries don't go very well in court. Also, my orthopedic surgeon says I had a previous injury in there, and it does look like I did. Of course the other side is going to pounce on that. The fact is, though, that I've never been to a doctor in my life for a back problem.

I expect to get very little out of it.
