I've mostly avoided social media sites like facebook and myspace for a long time now. Iit seem like everyday someone is telling me to make one. Now, i know alot of people ( I'm one of those people who has to know everyone) and it seems like facebook would atleast help me remember people's names.

What i'm trying to get at is what are the pros and cons of using facebook and why do you use it?

Pros:

1) You can keep in touch with old friends even if they travel to every corner of the earth.

2) You won't be out of a loop if someone's throws a big party and you weren't invited because you weren't on facebook.

3) Networking - always important

4) Chicks - You can keep in touch and tabs on chicks you want to meet and bang, its the perfect "stalker" website haha.

Cons:

1) Mostly its a complete waste of time for people with nothing else to do or attention wh0res who need validation 24/7.

2) others...

I don't have facebook because I see how much time people spend on it, checking it, sending messages, etc. and it just seems like a big waste of time.

I'd rather do my relationships in person than by text. It's just better that way all-around.

Yeah, everybody bugs you to sign up at first ("You're not on Facebook? You should have Facebook"), but the reality is, there are a lot of people not on it and it's no big deal.

Personally I'd rather have real friends and know who they are than have virtual friends over the internet, even if they do correspond to people that you know.

Way too many people think they're hot stuff because they have this number of friends or that number of friends on Facebook, so they must be popular.

I think time you can better spend on other things.

Oh, and another con is that some of your facebook "friends" might actually be potential employers. I've heard of this happening....

I say that's prehistoric thinking, saying that facebook will replace your real life relationships. Times are changing, and networking, and globalization are making it easier to communicate and keep in touch with people. The person above made a good list of pros and cons.
As for people who spend way too much time on it, id say thats over hyped. Sure once it first came out everyone was crazy for it. Lately everyone ive noticed everyone just check its casually every once in a while. Also id say about 95 % i know have it. I would say install it for sure, you have definitely been missing out. Don't worry about becoming addicted to it or anything, its not THAT entertaining ;)

I have accounts on both myspace and facebook, although I rarely check facebook and I rarely communicate on myspace. Facebook has a better interface, more stability and reliability, is geared much more towards middle agers than teenagers, and hands-down is the better product, but myspace is more popular because it has a vastly larger social network and people are more inclined to go where their friends are already.

Even though I hate the annoyances of myspace, I am a strong advocate of the usefulness of virtual social networks (and how it reflects the human need to be social). Sure, it's always better to communicate in person, but virtual social networks are complementary and supplementary to regular life. It's a tool. It's not a replacement.

Facebook has expansive privacy settings and this comes down to using common sense, like only approving friend requests from people you actually know and either not posting or restricting access to pictures or other materials which may be frowned upon by employers.

Just set up profiles on both of them, and see for yourself. If you dont like them, you dont have to log on. Neither me, or anyone I know uses them as pick up tools. You could, I guess, but I just use it as a social tool. I think its kind of neat when people I haven't even thought of in ten years hit me up out of the blue. When I first set up my myspace page, i got sort of hooked on browsing profiles for a while, but now i just check for messages, and write messages to people I have something to say to.

It by no means, replaces real interaction. People who think that are stupid. I hardly know anyone who doesnt have a myspace. You can make it as private as you want, and use it as much or as little as you want. Dont read into all the hype about it.

There really are no cons about it, I dont care what anyone says, its all how you use it. Its no more of a waste of time than this forum is.

Its a sick pleasure that serves its purpose, like banging a fatty or eating fast food.

To me facebook is a waste of time. The first 2 weeks I was goin nuts on it and after the first day I had 50 friends already. Then I realized I dont talk to nor do I care about any of these people.

Bottomline myspace/facebook/social networking sites are lame. Its web 2.0 and real life and the online world are blurring together more then ever. This is both good and bad but real life is much better.

It's great for getting in touch with old friends, and also my friends use it to share pictures with each other. However, as mentioned above, I am often flooded with "status updates" from a lot of people who I don't really care to know their everyday schedule/mood. It is interesting to observe how many people have daily (or more than daily) updates that announce to their network what they're up to.

It's also somewhat useful if you meet someone and don't get their number, you can get in touch with them on the internet. However, I've found that events scheduled over the internet have a much less personal touch than the old school way, so beware.

Agreed. When I see those, I always have the urge to change mine to give a play-by-play on all my boogers and farts.

I have not really been into facebook but i decided to give it a go. I suppose it is good for keeping in touch with people and it seems a bit more interactive than email and for networking too. :)

God I hate the people that do that. Mostly girls. A few guys do the same thing and I just shake my head.

There is 1 girl who updates her status through her cell almost hourly...usually with emotional messages about how happy or upset she is with her current boyfriend!! She is 30 years old!

People that do that are just desperate.

Facebook is fine for people 15- 23

Once out of college it seems pretty lame lol I see how younger college kids and high school kids eat this facebook and myspace up. But as a 31 yr old I have no use for it lol it just comes across lame and creppy

grown men shouldn't be poking each other and writing on walls LMAO nor should they have any use for those childish applications

Facebook was originally created for just university use..It was called connect u and was a way for everybody at the school to know everybody and find out where the next big party will be

Zuckerberg stole the idea and created facebook and didnt put any limitations on it lol it eventually blew up and microsoft bought it for a crap load of money

Now facebook is just like tv...Its free to use but you get constant advertising from slick marketers trying to sell **** and it will only get worse

Soon facebook will look like a nascar..just a site full with advertising

This is so true

What I learned from facebook is that I really have very few friends lol I looked at my facebook one day and I had 323 friends...And I truly care about maybe 10 out of all those so called friends lol

I really could'nt give a **** about most of the people on my facebook

In the real world if you have 10 amazing friends who would take a bullet for you thats doing pretty good..sadly on facebook its all about inflating those numbers so you look cool lol people just add anybody

I had people adding me who I went to school with in grade 7 lol That was like 15-16 years ago lol and I havent seen any of them since
