Exercise balls

Hi everyone,

I've got to spend most of my day sitting and it's really killing me: first, it makes my back hurt sometimes, and second it is making me lose my fitness level (use to move around a lot more before).

So here comes my question, I've read that using an exercise ball (o swiss ball, I guess you know what I mean) instead of your chair can help you with the back pain and it also forces you to move a bit to keep balance (I know it won't really make a lot of difference but I guess it's better than simply sitting on a chair, isn't it?)

So, does anyone know if it's really worth trying one of this things? Can you sit on it for long periods of time?

why not start an actual exercise regimen instead of just buying a wuss ball.

I do not want the ball as a substitute for working out. I thought that would be obvious.

I just want to know if they actually do something when you use it instead of a wuss chair ;).

That sounds like a good idea to me. Keep your back rounded and your abs tight wherever you go. It'll keep you in tip-top tension.

Sitting on fit-balls, or swiss balls, or whatever you want to call them, is excellent for your back.

Due to its instability, sitting on these balls forces your core muscles to activate in order to maintain your balance. Most people slouch when they sit in a normal chair - they are supported by the chair and so can afford to relax and sit in positions which place a lot of stress on the spine and core muscles. Over time, these awkard 'slouchy' sitting positions will cause back pain.

Fit-balls will force your core to be constantly active and so will help prevent slouching and subsequent back pain. If your core is weak you may find it difficult sitting on a fit-ball all day, but your core strength will quickly improve and you will find your back a lot better for it.

I recommend it.

Hi for the tips, manuva.

Has anyone else actually tried this? If I finally buy one and try it I'll report back my experiences.
