The leaders and the followers
People divide themselves into two groups. The leaders and the followers. The only thing that differs ones from the others is their mindset.

The easiest way to walk is to follow someone's steps. That is no-brainer; you just choose your leader and go after him. The bad thing is that you'll never be a leader this way because someone else will be always in front of you.

By not following other people I don't mean ignoring them. If someone achieved success then it is definitely worth analyzing. Just don't blindly follow other people. If you see that someone has some great way of doing something - see if you can use it. But do it because that way seems right, not because you want to be like that person.

Think about music artists. They've got thousands of fans that try to be just like them. Those fans read interviews and try to follow their life philosophy. And when do they end?

This is extreme but shows the point. You don't lead when you follow.

Equality
All people are equal. Even Pope was one day an AFC boy from some village. Therefore there is absolutely no way to treat anyone as someone better than you.

Someone may be better in something than you. He may score more chicks. He may earn more money. But he isn't superior. He's human, just like you.

Six months ago I met my friend from elementary school. He is younger than me. He told me about his bussiness (and he's still in high school!). Did I think, "Wow, he's so great, how did he did that?" No! I knew that I'm equal to him so I asked myself "What can I do to archive similar success?" I didn't ask how have he done that. If he had figured out the formula of success, then I could do that too because I was equal to him. And guess what...

Some other time I talked to my other friend via ICQ. He's Mensa member with IQ even higher than mine (160 or sth). Yet he treats popular people, as they are supreme in some way. He is happy that one of them was in his gym class, he admires them and tries to be just like them. Guess what. He's one of those invisible people. He's more intelligent than most of us but he achieved almost nothing.
Sad...

So when you see popular guy on campus or on TV you won't treat him as someone better. He isn't. Just like that. There is no reason for you to follow him, to act like him or to try to gain his respect. You both are human.

The risk
Walking your own path means that you will take the risks. You don't know what's ahead of you. You will get burned. You will do the wrong things. And there is a chance that you won't get as far as any of the other leaders. But you'll get somewhere. You'll gain followers. And there is a chance that you'll get to the places that no man had been before.

Remember the race to Moon? Cold war?
Americans treated Russians at least as equal. Russians sent Gagarin to the space. Did Americans say, "Gee, they're superior to us"? Did they ask how did Russians achieve that? Hell no! They had their own methods and their own style. There was a chance that their methods would proove to be inferior, there were risks involved but they didn't follow anyone. And they won.
Till today Russians have got different ways than Americans. In some ways they prove to be better, in others - worse. They didn't begin to follow Americans just because they lost. And they don't think that Americans are superior to them because there's no reason to think like that.

Constant improvement
I believe that this is a formula for success. Sure - you may not follow the others; you may believe that they're equal to you. Just as long as you sit on your ass and hope that one day you'll win the lottery you'll be left behind and forgotten.

Be a better person every day. Improve every aspect of your personality by trying different, even crazy things and checking the results. In no time other people will ask you how did you achieve something; how did you know to do something. And the truth will be that you won't know. You just tried random things, some of them didn't work and some of them did.

Be first, be better or be different
That's my motto.

When you don't follow other people, you acknowledge that everyone is equal, constantly improve yourself and take risks - you will be first, you will be better, or at least you will be different. And that is what makes people successful.

Popularity ingredient
Now, when you're successful with a little bit of marketing you will become popular. Just throw out a little bits of information about your successes from time to time (sometimes even that isn't required) and people will talk about you and will recognize you. Add DJ mentality to it, be outgoing, don't treat anyone as inferior. People will admire you and they will love you. It's that simple.

Oh... and chill out. Life is too damn boring if you treat it seriously.

Carbani

You may love me, you may hate me, but I won't stand you having absolutely no opinion about me

ONE OF THE BEST POSTS I'VE READ IN A DAMNED LONG TIME.

although the spelling is a little off..

original and lovely. this deserves a 6 out of 5 stars.

it briefly explains some of the most important aspects of becoming a better person.

leadership is an essential DJ trait and shouldn't be taken lightly because if there's anything else that proves if one is a man or not, it is his leadership.

Thank you, Nasty :)

As for my spelling - English is not my natural language. In fact - sosuave is the only place where I write in English. I spell checked my post and fixed errors that I found.

One day I saw one of my professors on a corridor. I initiated a strong eye contact and did nothing. He said "good day" to me first. That is the power of ec!

good post to preserve your individuality in a time when stereotypes are our first impressions, uniformity is praised, and the rich individuals get richer....and here i go, trying to add to carbani's post, when I could be paving new paths and writing my own =)

It is true, you can take the road well-traveled and go farther than you could hope to on your own, or you can take take to the wilderness and hope you stumble upon an undiscovered paradise. Obviously, there are risks with either. In one, you risk competition from the millions of others who are also traveling on your road, while in the other, the harder of the two paths because so many of the paths have already been paved, you risk your life in a vain and fruitless path.

PS. sometimes it is not always the best to be the tallest tree in the forest, because you may always be the first to be struck by lightning.

Be a leader of your own destiny, I say, for we cannot all be leaders of all men. Go as far as you can without being that tallest, and inevitably most exposed tree.
