Hey guys I'm studying Humanities in College right now. Right now we're studying the Egyptians - they were a great group of people, very smart and kept a stable civilization for a span of 2000 years. Then again, I prefer The Greeks a lot better, they very much resemble our western culture and ideals.

This got me sort of thinking, if you could live anywhere in the past, where would it be and why?....I know this sounds like a topic your english teacher would probably give you for one of your daily journals or something..but then again..it's freakin interesting.

Never underestimate the revulsion power of body odor. Every civilization before modern times has suffered from insane wreaks of poor hygiene. Who would want to live in a society where people would bathe only perhaps once a week (and we're talking about nobility)? The ladies were certainly not in good shape, probably missing some teeth, not to mention loaded with disease. Most notably, lifespans were not quite what they are now. If I lived in any other era, I most certainly would be dead by now.

Women have never looked (or smelled) any better than they do right now. Consider the worst, most reviling women of today. Those were the beauty queens of yesteryear.

I have to say, Ive always had a fascination with the Roman empire. I would have loved to be around in the time Julius Cesar was Cesar. Just to see him, the architecture and the atmosphere in Rome at the time. I would have also loved to have been in the Colluseum, would have been something absolutely phenominal, cruel, but still, a part of recent history that will remain unforgettable for a long long time.

True, but not sure woman were as fat in many eras of history as they are right now in the west.

The thing is, if you lived in those times, you wouldn't know of the wonders of today. You'd be used to the sights and smells you describe as bad. Basically, the standard of beauty back then would become your own. You're cheating the question of its value by using knowledge and experience you wouldn't have.

actually, thats a good point :)

Hygiene was fairly decent back then. public baths, running water and actual toilets (not just chamberpots or holes in the ground... for most people)

truely an era of beauty... lot of violence too, but beauty :)

lol the Freudians are going to have a field day on this one.

You 'prefer' the Greeks, huh? Heh, you know there is a reason that anal sex is refered to as 'greek' right? And besides, those ancient Greeks believed that the highest form of love was bewteen a grown man and a boy, while true love was between two men.

I would have to say the 60's-70's era. That was when we didn't have AIDS and all of the major STD's were easily curable with a shot of penicillian.

I think it would depend on whether I'd be able to choose my social status. I'd choose either the High Renaissance or Imperial Rome.
