If you have a choice between the two, is there any advantages of oen over the other for bench pressing?

I prefer dumbbells, for safety purposes (ie when you haven't got a spotter), and also there's not much chance of a pec tear with flat db pressing, flat bb pressing on the other hand ..

For incline/decline presses either are fine.

Dumbbells are a little harder to control as well, which can only be a good thing for strength/grip.

Dumbells incorperate more stabilizers, Barbells don't. I would take dumbells only workouts over barbell anyday.

As mentioned before, dumbbells require much more stabalization, so I would definately recommend dumbbells. You won't be able to lift as much as with a barbell, but you will be getting a better overall workout.

This is speculation and I wonder if someone can confirm for me... Since barbells can enable you to lift more with less use of stabalizing muscles... if you want to target something specific, like your upper chest when doing a bench press, would it be better to use a barbell (more weight focussed on one set of muscles)???

barbell, you can do more weight = getting bigger. im not a fan of dumbells except for a couple things such as curls or if i need to break a plateau. see where you get better gains, or just do a 6 week rotation. n ever stil with 1 thing, change it uper every month or 2. and if your getting gains never change anything till you stop

You should only change when you can't progress in weight or reps at a particular exercise for a while (say give yourself two attempts to beat your previous weight/reps) - if you can't then switch exercises.

Otherwise, if it ain't broke why try to fix it?

more weight doesn't always translate inter bigger size..you will learn more about that later van.. just practice good form and speed first are actually a more viable option.

dumbell or barbells are equally good. Arnold used both. we can as well.
