I'm sure the long term effects of taking a multivitamin are good, but do you feel any immediate effects such as more energy?

You do feel extra energy, not immediatley, like a red bull, but you get vitamin B, and that speeds up your metabolism.

Vit themselves do NOT give you energy. They are used in metabolic processes in the body that contribute to it, but just popping the vitamin doesn't mean energy comes from the vitamin. Big misconception among people.

Without them they wont work with the body, and then no you wont have any.

May not be the best analogy, but think about a car. Gas gives the car fuel right? But if you put the gas (fuel) in the tank and just sit there, does the car move? Does it move if you dont turn it on?

You have to crank the ignition, the spark plugs fire, the pistons move, you shift into gear, you hit the pedal, the gas gets sucked in the lines........

Gas is only part of what makes that car go.

Its kind of like the vitamin. You pop the vitamin, and you just dont go, and say... Dang, look at all that energy. The vitamins have to work in the body, and WITH the body to do their job. All these processes like the car is what makes it happen. Not the vitamin or gas in itself.

Now if you say does caffeine give you energy yes, but that is different than a vitamin/mineral.

Hopefully that helps some, and if anyone has a better analogy, please add. :)

IMO, the verdict is still out...I'm really not sure taking a multi does me any good...I feel no difference whatsoever, and I really don't believe that people are nutrient deficient...Americans have access to virtually every food necessary for adequate nutrition. Of course, the argument is that taking a multi is necessary if you're working out because working out creates an excess demand for minerals...but I eat a lot...and my diet includes vegetables, lots of them, which are loaded with minerals.

I'm thinking of discontinuing my multi and seeing if I feel a difference...
You are partially correct. WE people are prob not nutrient deficient. Again yes, there is still no solid verdict. Though there was, now they are changing it and still debating it. Even JAMA.

They do have access, BUT, the majority of Americans dont eat like us. I took a class on cancer once, and the professor asked how many students ate X amount of fruits, and vegetables and grains and all that in a day. You'd be surprised at how many people dont eat crap. Well... they do eat CRAP, but I mean crap food.

This is how most Americans are. THEY EAT JUNK. We dont eat as much, and in fact I dont eat even close. BUT they do. They have access like we do, but they chose not to eat the way we do.

If anything, THOSE people need them badly. I see what people eat at work, and the trash is LOADED with fast food bags, and it is amazing at how much junk people eat in a days time. Just baffles me. 20 and 30 bags of Wendy's and McDonalds and Sonic, and you name it. DISGUSTS me, but they do it.

I'm just glad i'm not them.

I see what you're saying. I look at junk food and fast food the way I look at alcohol. It's got no nutritional value for your body, but a little here and there is harmless. It's when people have 3 drinks a day, or 3 visits to the drive thru a day that it becomes a problem.

Last weekend I woke up late and was starving, my friends called me to go to the beach. I didn't have time to make breakfast or go to a nice restuarant, but needed some energy, so I went to mcdonalds and got a crispy chicken wrap and some fries. I needed some quick food because I was starving and in a hurry. Otherwise, I rarely even go to Micky Ds. Using fast food sparingly isn't a problem, it's when it's the mainstay every day.

Average Person:
Deficient? Maybe not.
Running at optimum? Probably not.

Better too many vitamins/minerals than not enough. To an extent of course... and it makes me cry that i have to put that caveat since it should be an obvious given.

I'd say the amount of cancer and heart disease and all that mess these days in people with poor diets is more than enough evidence that people are deficient. They can't defend against their own freakin cells going nuts.

As Espi states, the verdict is still out, and it is. Experts go back and forth on this every month, and there is something new out all the time.

IMO I think we need MORE than what we get perhaps, but to what extent? Do we really need 8333% of a B-Vit?

I think we prob get more than we need out of our multi because its really going to be high compared to your Centrum. And this is where more research has to be done. If we eat the way WE DO. Healthy and get good food in, is a 1 a day with 100% on top of what we get sufficient? No one knows this yet.

I do think however, some people OVER do it. People take their multi then they take an extra E pill or B-Complex 100 or 2g of Vit C. I take a multi that says to take 2 per day but I only take 1.
