No, gel does not cause hair loss. The only way I can think of to have "thicker, more" hair is to use Rogaine. Also, shaving your hair does not make it grow back any thicker or darker... that's an urban legend.

You do realize that it's possible for you to use "google.com" all by yourself, right? I mean, not everyone in life is going to answer your questions and do your homework for you - there might come a time when you're called on to actually man up and seek out the answers you desire instead of relying on other people to do it for you.

That being said, how would gel cause hair loss? That's like saying that shampoo causes hair loss, or better yet, that hats cause baldness. Unless the gel had an acid in it, I can't think of any reason that it would cause any ill effects to anybody's hair, period. What reason do you have that it might? Please post links.

As for shorn hair growing back thicker (the urban legend), I'll even do the googling for you.

http://www.snopes.com/spoons/oldwives/hairgrow.asp

The part of the hair we style is already dead. The living sections lie below the surface of the scalp. Cutting or shaving the extreme end of the dead section isn't going to have an impact on the parts that are alive. Go forth to shave and trim as much as you like — you will not be affecting the intrinsic nature of your hair.

Now, go google.

diablo: i asked u to post links because i thought that you might have a good website in paticular that u got all your information from, but obv not.

And my reason for thinking that gel might cause hair loss, well the gell dries on your head right? so does this not suffocate the hair?

Your critical jugement of my question is not appreciated either. But thanx for the help anyways...

I've heard rumours gel can cause hair damage, but haven't confirmed it from either side.

Although I personally don't use a lot of gel.

Easy, use a wig, and put gel on that wig.

Read my previous reply, in particular the first sentence of the italicized portion of text. To save trouble, I'll post it again here.

The part of the hair we style is already dead.

If you suffocate a dead man, would he be any 'deader' than he was before?

Most common cause is genetic hairloss. However, if the onset is sudden, it could be a bout of telogen effluvium or a form of alopecia. These usually happen when the body goes into shock from stress, illness, poor diet, drugs, therapy among other things.

If abnormally large amount of hair is falling out by the root, it's probably not genetic and you should see a doctor or specialist to determine the cause. Genetic hairloss is a gradual shrinking of the folicle and thinning of hair and the actual shedding of hair is never more than normal.

Sometimes gel can dry your scalp, but it wouldn't cause noticeable hairloss, otherwise it wouldn't be approved for sale.

Maybe it's not proven by 'science' yet, but from real life experience I can honestly say things like hats, gel and other supposed 'urban legends' do, in fact,. have an adverse effect on your hair.

The point isnt that these things are killing an already dead thing..we know that already. It's that these very things create problems for your scalp, which has everyhting to do with your roots.

Point is, I've gone through times of heavy hat wearing, and it actually made me lose hair. Coyupled with this hat wearing was a a certain hair product i would use every day ythat would always make my hair greasy and scalp unhealthy.

Now, I've stopped with the products and the hat wearing and my hair has completely grown back.

I'm not this goes for everyone..i know guys with carperts for hair who wear hats everyday...but some ppls scalp are more sensitive and more apt to losing hair than others, I guess.

PS-I also tried shaving my head when i thought i was losing it...and it did actually grow in thicker. BUT, I attribute this only in small part to having an easier time maintaining a healthy scalp and in much larger part that wjhen you shave it off..well, u just dont worry about it.

I think a lot of hairloss is psychological.

Hair Gel related to hair loss?

Well...It's true that hair gels contain a type of alcohol in them, SD-something I believe. Naturally, alcohol can exibit a "drying" effect on your hair if you use it frequently. Dry hair isn't healthy hair, so therefore it's safe to assume it would be more prone to breaking off.

Now, having that said, if you're the type of guy who uses hair gel a lot then chances are you get your hair cut fairly regularly. Maybe it's just me, but I guess I don't see a lot of guys with very long hair who use gel. Pomaide - maybe - but that's another story. Anyway - hair grows out from the root (duh), so it's fairly safe to assume the ends of your hair strands are the most damaged. They've been there the longest and thus have been subjected to whatever it is you've been doing to your hair the longest.

Getting a haircut about once a month should, in theory, insure that unless you're doing a lot of "other" stuff (blow drying, dying, etc) to your hair that no part of your hair should ever get too bad. Use a deep conditioner once a week or so if you're really paranoid about it, but like I said - if you get your hair cut fairly regularly and don't abuse it then you shouldn't have much to worry about with gels.

Hope this helps.

Excessive shampooing can, in fact, cause hair loss.

Now getting back to the actual subject, I don't know if buzzle.com is a reliable scientific source, but their website states the following:

Many men and women use chemicals on their hairs in order to make them look beautiful, but these chemical treatments cause more hair damage if are not done correctly. Improper use of dyes, bleaches, tints, straighteners, and permanent waves destroy hair structure and cause hair loss. Because of improper chemical treatments our hair can become weak, thin and break before their resting period where they shed naturally. If chemical treatment is used too often, then it can harm hairs. You should not use two different chemical treatments on same day. If a chemical treatment is harming your hairs, it is better to stop using that treatment until your hairs grow properly and become healthy.
