I was reading this article, and it made me recall an anecdote on one of those stupid talk shows about a guy who would go to nightclubs wearing scrubs (with a stethoscope in the pocket), in which it was presumed that he was able to do well with women because of that. It does seem that being a physician brings with it a connotation of high sexual market value, so this makes sense. That said, I have hear some stories about how much alimony & child support that divorced physicians pay, so maybe the type of woman who seeks out physicians is the type of woman that is only interested in his alimony & child support paying ability.

I've spent my entire life around doctors. "Downtown", where I used to sarge, is less than a mile away from one of the biggest metropolitan hospitals in the country, where my father works as a physician. I have never seen a doctor "out" in a scrub suite or his lab coat. Most of them are too vain or style conscious to do this and figure their several thousand dollar suite will be more impressive than their uniform, which is no longer specific to doctors. I did run in to my doctor once at a country line dancing bar, and he was dressed like crap.

I don't think the type of man who has what it takes to become a doctor is going to be so try hard that they go out in their medical garb. At least, that sort of man shouldn't be able to become a doctor, IMO.

Like Samspade said, I have seen doctors who have just finished working 12h, 24hr, or longer shifts stop by a crap corner bar or restaurant directly around the hospital because they were absolutely worn out and wanted some food, but that doesn't even happen too much anymore around here. The hospital has several restaurants inside of it, offers great discounts to the doctors, and the hospital has purchased so much of the surrounding land in its expansion that the only places left anymore are McDonalds and Wendys.

No it doesn't just mean you work in the medical field. In many hospitals there are rules as to who can wear scrubs, and around the campus settlement of a hospital, the only people you would see in scrubs would generally be doctors.

In Mayo Clinic, surgeons have to walk around with scrubs and non-surgeons don't, for instance.

In Cleveland Clinic, it is forbidden to come to and leave the work in scrubs, for sanitary reasons as mentioned in the original URL.

I don't think it's an SMV issue, though.

Scrubs are the shirts and trousers or gowns worn by nurses (perioperative nurse), surgeons, and other operating room personnel when "scrubbing in" for surgery...The wearing of scrubs has been extended outside of surgery in many hospitals. Originally issued as replacement clothing if street clothing was contaminated, scrubs are now worn by any hospital personnel in any clean environment.

Now, I'm a nurse and I occasionally go to a bar with job friends after work in my scrubs. I have made it work with a Hooters waitress and a nursing student in the bar in the past. So I absolutely think it works. But I didn't just put on the outfit. I had to talk the talk too. We had conversations about medical issues before hand.

BTW, they knew I was a nurse, not a doctor.

I couldn't see what part of that statement mentions "ass-wipers", and as a person who has spent years among doctors and various hospitals campuses, I have never seen, say a nurse in scrubs, in a Starbucks. Looks like you don't get the "point" of the original post which is primarily complaining about doctors in scrubs, walking outside the hospital premises. But to appreciate that of course you need to witness the problem, which you clearly haven't.

Evidently this guy who did it (and he wasn't even any type of medical worker) had picked up and banged some women, and when they found out about it, they wanted him arrested. :crackup:

As a Dentist, one of my best lines is " you have a cavity I'd like to fill" I wear scrubs to Walmart...shopping while I wait for the sterilizer to run(have to oil the drills,don't want oil on my real clothes), to a kids soccer stuff... if I don't have time to change and make it on time, and once to the bar on Halloween[stethoscope and all][told everyone who knew me I was dressed a a REAL doctor]

I DON'T wear them to pickup women. I want a woman who is attracted to me for the bulge in my front pocket...not the bulge in my back pocket

Where I'm from, doctors, nurses, nursing aides, dentists, dental assistants and hygienists all might wear scrubs. I don't go to clubs, but I've seen them all out shopping before or after work in their scrubs. So I certainly don't think it's only doctors. I've never heard of this idea before that only doctors can wear them.

I don't really see any pickup benefit to wearing scrubs. Why don't they just run around saying "I'm a doctor! I'm a doctor!" if that's the point they want to make?

By the way, if someone goes to a club in their scrubs after work, that seems a little gross. They might have some body fluids or germs on there, which is why some facilities (but not all) require you to remove them before leaving work. I think such places usually provide scrubs for their employess, however.

I'm a medical resident. At the hospital I work at, all different kinds of doctors wear scrubs. So do med students, so do PAs, so do nurse practitioners, so do clinical pharmacists, so do speech pathologists, so do some nurses. Usually floor nurses wear specific kinds of scrubs that distinguish them, but those that work in the OR wear the same scrubs that surgeons do. There are some folks that work in housekeeping that wear the same scrubs that surgeons do!

At most hospitals you're not supposed to wear scrubs outside the hospital, but that rule is routinely ignored. You just pickup a new set of scrubs in the OR or locker room if you need sterile scrubs. A lot of people prefer to wear scrubs because they're a lot more comfortable and quicker to slip into than business casual.

So the takeaway is that wearing scrubs means jack sh*t! Even wearing a white coat means nothing these days. All of the above mentioned professions wear those as well.
