i hear opinions from 2 types.

1st type says a person needs to lift only 3 times a week, and more than that
is almost waste of time and less effective.

2nd type says a person needs to lift monday through saturday and usually
do cardio or rest on sunday.

i always get this differing questions. i am 145lb, 5 ft 6inches.

i want to get big, as in muscles. i been working out for quite a while, so
give me some good advice if you know well about lifting.

I lift 3 days a week. I would get burnt out if I did anymore than that.

i work-out 2 days on 1 day off (shoulders, back, rest, legs, chest), cardio roughly 4-5 times a week when i have the time, be it a basketball game, just shooting hoops, swimming, sprints or jump rope.

A schedule that's worked pretty well for me as far as size and leanness go is:

Monday - Legs, light cardio
Tuesday - Abs heavy, intense cardio
Wednesday - Chest/shoulders/tris, light cardio
Thursday - Abs light, intense cardio
Friday - Back/bi's, light cardio
Saturday - Stretching/light sports
Sunday - Rest + eat heaps

You should lift weights every OTHER day...When you lift weights you are strecthing and tearing the muscle apart. You give yourself a day for a break so your muscles can repare itself.

Depends on your experience and how fast you recover.

If you're new to lifting, lift 3 days per week. Once you get more advanced you can go 4 or 5 days. Always have at least 1 day of complete rest, and 1-2 days of 'active' rest---some walking, swimming, or light sports.

I always got the best results from 3 square days a week. I'd do the most important (to me) parts first then on down. Usually was like this:

Day 1 - Chest and Thighs, with chest movements starting at presses then maybe flies or some other isolation exercise. For thighs, basically squats or leg presses followed by either lunges or extensions + leg curls.

Day 2 - Back, Shoulders and Abs with back movements starting with deadlifts or the Clean and Jerk. Typically I'd do either Deadlifts + Military Press for 3 sets each or just the Clean and Jerk for 5 sets. Then either rows/pullups and some shoulder isolation exercises, then a circuit of abs.

Day 3 - Bis, Tris and Calves. Do what you will. I'd usually do some sort of cardio on this day as well. I would do a good amount of cardio in my free time anyway.

All of those workouts took me about an hour. Make sure to stretch well, that was my undoing.

Also of good note, and it's just my experience, the BEST I ever achieved was doing a football workout I had for one exercies per each major bodypart. Overloaded everything it seemed like.

Good luck.

I go to the gym 6 days a week sometimes 7,but the 7th day would be cardio only.

Lifting more then 3 is not overkill. Whoever told you that is lazy, end of story.
