My friend went and bought one of those perfect push ups and an iron gym to do pull ups a while back. Now he swears he's getting jacked and bigger. I've always known getting "ripped" to be just having low body fat.

I don't believe those things really do much of anything but I wanted to know for sure from someone here.

Anything can work if you go at it hard enough and with enough intensity. Probably not the best approach, but not a bad one either. Pull-up/push-up programs are definitely solid choices. Pull-ups are in the top 5 overall muscle building exercises and push-ups aren't far behind.

I would expect his progress to slow down pretty soon though if he doesn't do anything to mix it up.

More than anything else, it depends on what his dietary regimen is. If he's eating like a bodybuilder and chugging protein powder, he will get more results.

They are a great way to start the journey and gain muscular endurance and some tone. For greater results however the gym is required.

They are good exercises. Keep in mind no single exercise is going to get you ripped or make you huge.

The main factor is your genetics.

Skinny guys
1. Heavy weight training
2. Eat more
3. Minimum cardio

Fat guys
1. Moderate weight training
2. Eat less
3. Maximum cardio

Muscle Guy, for a stocky build, do you think how much protein you consume in a day is vital?
Is doing more than 45 minutes of cardio detrimental to your musle?
How often and how long cardio do you recommend?
If you burn more calories than eat but consume garbage calories, will you still achieve a good physique? Or will it just be a pudgy smaller version?

I try to eat 1 gram of protein per pound. I know some guys recommend eating as much as 3 grams of protein per pound, but that puts a big strain on the kidneys. Also your body can't utilize the extra protein, that's why a lot of guys take a lot of dumps if they take too much protein.

Basically

3 meals
1 lean meat
1 fibrous carbohydrate (vegetables)

1 meal
high fiber oatmeal (before your workout)

1 meal
protein shake (right after your workout)

45 minutes cardio is perfect for stockier guys.

Interval training is the best.

If you follow a hardcore weight training program, follow a diet plan and cardio program similiar to the one above, you will get a damn good physique.

I would also like to stress with a normal healthy diet, you do not need to consume any creatine, protein shakes..etc, all that is marketing sham I have never taken any of those and I am ripped like no other. I get all my protein in my daily foods. Only thing extra I take is Cod fish oil.

Becareful making big general generalizations like that based on you own genetics, this how misinformation gets out there and how people get confused. Your body might just be more naturally lean, you might be at a lower weight. A lot of people have trouble getting the food down, protein shakes can really be a life saver and taking creatine isn't a scam.

There's a psychological side to supplements too.

Personally I found that when I started spending money on supplements I started making more of effort to get to the gym, and enjoyed it a lot more. There is more motivation because you're actually putting a monetary investment into it now.

That is good for you.

Have you taken into consideration that not everyone is born with the same genetics?

Protein shakes are especially good for skinny guys because they give much needed extra protein and calories without adding volume. (Volume is what makes you full)

I made a post on my blog about my personal experience with creatine.

that's a generalization that i'm not willing to make.

i will say that most guys starting out should get the diet & exercise dialed in properly and sustain it for a while before trying to add any supplements.

i don't consider protein a supplement, it's just a shortcut for guys who can't find another way to get that much protein.

Protein Shakes are a good way to get extra protein. You need at least 1-2G per LB of lean body mass. If you can get that in food itself, thats fine.

Hilarious how many responses that got. Seems a lot of people use protein shakes as a clutch.

Yes.

But you're approaching it wrong. Exercises don't get you ripped. Diets don't get you ripped. YOU get you ripped.

My reply to all you guys... Protein shakes are not needed at all with any genetics. Everything you need comes from a healthy diet. The reason I am ripped is because I workout like an animal rofl.

Now lets get one thing clear... Am I spreading misinformation or the big protein/supplement cooperation's trying to sell you something you don't need. I do not care if you guys take it or not, all i was trying to say it is completely unnecessary. I can show you a youtube video of a commercial trying to say high fructose syrup is the same thing as raw sugar.

Whey protein is made from cheese.

Cheese is real food.

Is protein from organic meat the best source of protein? Of course it is. Consider this.

1. Some guys can't afford organic meat.
2. Some guys have small appetites.

Men frequently err by talking too much. They often monopolize conversations, droning on and on about topics that bore women to tears. They think they're impressing the women when, in reality, they're depressing the women.
