Do not vote if you think nothing of this idea.

I've been thinking of a way that we can better improve the forums, and the thought of a DJ mentor system came to mind. I would love to set this up (this may mean the delay of my bootcamp[but i think this would be more beneficial anyway]). The idea is that about 10 elite HSDJ's become mentor's and they take on a couple of student's each and teach them the way of the DJ. There will be strict rules and guidelines for both the mentor and student and they will both have to make a commitment to meet on AIM/MSN/whatever a couple of time's a week. But if the mentor properly teaches the student, then he too can become a mentor, but only if he's mentor thinks he's ready.

For this to work I (and some other HSDJ's) have to work very hard to come up with a fool proof mentoring system. I can see no other way then the system working on anything else other then trust and honesty. If the students lie and become a mentor then this can mess up a whole line of DJ's which would in turn become a disaster, but there are no rewards and no respect on this board to be earnt (well we will try and keep it that way) so there should be no reason's to lie.

I will be hand picking the mentor's and PMing them to see if they are interested. If you would like to help with the MS(Mentoring System) please PM me(Just because you are helping out does not stop you from becoming a mentor/student). What i want you guys to do right now is reply to me with your comments/suggestions.

Sammo,

I posted something similar about a year ago, called Adopt-A-Newbie. Basically senior members volunteered by putting their names and email addresses in the topic, then lurkers/newbies would choose who they wanted as a mentor. This required the newbie to do research on the poster, as well as the board in general. Volunteers put up a limit (I put two) and once those people had emailed him and an agreement between them had been made, his post was edited to remove their email address and add FULL to the post.

This was back on the old board, so there was no sticky, and the post fell off the page after a while, so new guys didn't get to see it. My newbies stopped emailing me after a while, and I got caught up in real life - the same thing I'm sure happened to the rest of those who volunteered.

I don't think you should allocate mentor/student combinations as firstly age plays a factor. A 17 year old will not want to be mentored by a 14 year old simply because he is limited by the amount of experience he has had. Rather, the 17 year old should be able to choose his own mentor by researching the posts by the volunteer to see if they are on the same wavelength, and if the experience the mentor has had is enough to warrant him being a good mentor.

What could also work is when a new guy seems to be a little lost, senior members can PM him and offer to mentor him, and give him a little resume so the mentor has some "credentials" to go on.

Lastly, I think you should just make a quick system for this that feeds off itself, and not be actively involved in running all of this. The reason being that you've got to get off the computer and out into the real world to put all this mumbo jumbo theory into practice. Spending excessive amounts of time on this message board is more harmful than useful. It becomes a crutch, so your progress is limited.

Sammo, you are lighting the forum on fire with your good ideas.
I like this one alot. I have no wingmen or people who I could really talk to about this kind of stuff. I am sure tons of other people feel the same way. Between this idea and the bootcamp there will be more than enough support to get any down in the dumpts newbie and improve them. The bible is a great start but the support of our fellow DJs is a great motivation

I really hope that this and the bootcamp work out as well as we hope.

Of course the newbies would love this, but being a dj is about finding your own way and making your own mistakes... ON YOUR OWN. This might help them get on the right track, but any more than just getting them started would be counter-productive. Don't let them be lazy.

I understand what your trying to say .... i think, but if people had to make it on there own then why does this board exist, and why do you see so many newbie questions on the board? Of course people have to go after what they, personally want out of being a DJ but i don't see how a Mentor System is not a good way to teach them to a fairly high level as far as a DJ's most common traits.

Sounds good, another idea might be to sort of add a "progress report" type thing to this between n00bs and stuff. People can talk to each other every week or something about how their PUing went that week and they can keep tabs on each other, sort of like friendly competition, and we can share things we learned with each other. I know that I for one would really like that cuz I have a hard time doing stuff when there's no competition or nobody to "brag" too :p
I dunno if you guys talk to your friends about this, but most of my friends are AFC and are still pretty into the whole AFC lifestyle and I just can't talk to them about girls. The one friend who IS good with girls is very AFC yet still manages to get the girls (maybe he's extremely good looking?) I dunno, but whenever he talks to me he's always like, "yeah, I bought her roses and a teddy bear" and **** like that." So having a...buddy system? (I dunno what else to call it?) would be good for people with the same problems I have.

yeah good idea i might implement something like that later on in the program. But this could cause a problem, if the competition starts getting tight people may start lying, and then it's all just a waste of time, it also might start a competition between the mentors which could make them lie as well. This system is based on honesty.

I'm not talkin about like a board where everyone posts their stats or something (lol). I'm thinking more along the lines of 2 or 3 guys who keep tabs on each other (ie yeah, I reached my goals of x sarges, tried y strat, etc. it went well/bad b/c ___ and i learned ___. how bout you? what do you think?) and possibly discuss ideas they may have before posting it on the board. Nothing public, and if someone lies, then it's only hurting themselves if they don't sarge.
