Just wondering man, when threads are useful, why close them? Your explanation on that safe sex thread was a joke at best! And you closed it? I have been in the same situation as the guy who posted that thread many of times, and it helps hearing peoples answers and probablities or someone who has been in the same situation etc. It is a very serious and very scary situation.

Just wondering whats the deal? Because you shouldnt have the right to simply close threads when you wish for no proper reason.....

The same as this thread "Live while you can; society gonna plunge in ~30yrs ", that was an interesting thread, based on economics. Where is the politics? There is barely any mentioned, if that thread is closed because someone mentioned politics quickly, when 99% of the thread is based on economics, then why close it for? Because of a "rule" that no other moderator is concerned about other than yourself.

This is one of the few internet message boards where I think people wouldn't flame each other over political opinions.

If you want to talk, talk to your friends. If you want a girl to like you, listen to her, ask questions, and act like you are on the edge of your seat.

Hey skip, lets start some big giant fight and make them close it. Actually, this site needs some spice and what you bring is ok.

I think people really forget this is the freakin internet. It's mostly garbage, not real, impersonal, and very stupid.

Alright, this site is better, but don't ever, ever forget where it resides. Buyer beware!!

Really, this is what the Archive is for. A lot of threads that repeat thenselves from newbies should be merged and put into the Archive. In the bible, there'd be a section titled 'FAQ', because technically, that's where they should be in the first place.

Ah, who cares about politics? It's so...political.

Thats all it would be, is one giant flame/debate. Of course, what starts as a debate on the internet usually leads to some flame wars.

You know...

"George Bush is a _____ (instert adjective) ______ instert noun"

NO You'RE AN __________( repeat)

If I remember correctly, the thread in question asked "I had sex with a chick and the condom fell off, what are the odds of me getting AIDS?!?!!?". My response to this was [in summary], "There is no accurate way to determine what the probability of your contracting AIDS is with the information given". Really, the only useful information that could have been given would have been the following (which is made up, but serves to show what would constitute as useful): "Hello, I recently had sex with a female who had open sores on her vaginal area. I happen to know as a fact that she also has herpes, gonorrhea, and AIDS. I recently cut my manhood with a razor blade while shaving, and my penis came into contact with her vaginal cuts when the condom slipped during intercourse. What are the odds of me having an STD?"

Had that been the question, instead of "Oops! The condom slipped! Do I have AIDS?!?!?!?!!" then the thread would have remained open. Instead it was closed because:

1) The question it asked was unanswerable by anyone other than a medical professional even after extensive and expensive testing.
2) Based on the the following excerpt from the stickied thread entitled "Read before posting or your thread may be deleted!", "From this point on, threads lacking details, mainly those with only 1-2 sentences in the body, will be deleted as soon as a moderator comes across them", it violated this rule quite flagrantly. If you check, the thread in question consisted of 2 sentences. Not only that, but the second sentence was only 3 words long. I can guarantee you that if I were worried that I had perhaps contracted some STD, I would definitely type more than 1 sentence (and a second of only 3 words). In fact, I'd probably end up writing an entire book on the situation in order to get more accurate feedback.

In short, if someone asks "My car won't start. Why not?", this is not a valid thread. This is in effect the exact question which judoalex asked when he created the thread you refer to. For those of you not familiar with it, please visit the following link:

You are absolutely correct. I should not close any thread without proper reason. However, and as stated before, "threads lacking details, mainly those with only 1-2 sentences in the body, will be deleted as soon as a moderator comes across them". If you read further into what was written, you will find the following explanation as to why threads with 1-2 sentences aren't encouraged: if something matters to someone enough to take up a part of the forum by posting it, they should show that it matters to them by giving whatever it is they are proclaiming some thought before creating the threads. .

Regarding the thread in question, located here:
http://www.sosuave.net/forum/showthread.php?t=71759

I agree that it was/is a very interesting thread. In fact, I have several comments based on texts that I have read in and out of class that I would really enjoy sharing with others. Specifically, I would love to discuss how humans in two different stages (starting 100,000 years ago as the first stage and again at 10,000 years ago at the advent of agriculture) have started the 6th major extinction on Earth. However, the fact of the matter is that the owner of SoSuave has declared that there shall be no political discussion on the forum. If you would like to ask him to remove this rule, and he does, then I will by all means not close threads that have devolved into politics (as is the case in the thread in question). However, since that rule is still in effect, I have no choice but to close threads with quotes like the following:

I bet some liberal democrat taught you this ****.

Y DID WE GO TO IRAQ????? saddam??? HELL NO if it was saddam we be fuc'king kim jong in the head and ass right now with CASTRO suckin his balls! we went to IRAQ for OIL its THAT SIMPLE y OIL??? cuz WE DONT HAVE ENOUGH
I could continue giving examples but I think that the point has been made. Like I mentioned earlier, if you would like to petition the owner of the site for a change of policy that is definitely your prerogative. The fact that threads which start containing political debate always degress into name-calling and blatant flaming has been proven time and time again.

I do appreciate your calling attention the the threads which I have closed. I hope that I have adequetely explained why it is that I have taken the actions I have. In the future, if you would like to discuss thread closings with me, please use the PM feature. If you have a complaint or issue that you would like addressed, I will do my best to ensure that your point is dealt with in a manner that is satisfactory to all parties involved.

Thank you for your time.

It doesn't matter how good-looking you are, how romantic you are, how funny you are... or anything else. If she doesn't have something INVESTED in you and the relationship, preferably quite a LOT invested, she'll dump you, without even the slightest hesitation, as soon as someone a little more "interesting" comes along.

That's just not true. I've been a part of many political threads that didn't turn into a flame war. Obviously there are many examples that support your cynical opinion, but that doesn't mean political threads always turn into flames. It really shouldn't be difficult to tell what threads (such as your examples) will turn into flames; and the appropriate way to moderate would be to lock THOSE threads, or delete THOSE replies, and ban those posters. Everyone shouldn't be punished because of a few idiots. But it's a moot point. If you can remember, the reason political threads became banned was because certain members spammed half of the entire forum for weeks (months?) during the beginning of the Iraq War. Anti-spam policy should take care of that.

However, the fact of the matter is that the owner of SoSuave has declared that there shall be no political discussion on the forum. If you would like to ask him to remove this rule, and he does, then I will by all means not close threads that have devolved into politics (as is the case in the thread in question).
And how do you suggest we do that? From what I can tell, Allen gave up on this place awhile ago.

You stated he said something along the lines of:

"I had sex with a chick and the condom fell off, what are the odds of me getting AIDS?!?!!?"

Then you said: "Oops! The condom slipped! Do I have AIDS?!?!?!?!!". Very different question, he didnt ask if he did, he was simply seeking how much chance he has of contracting aids, and by the "odds", he obviously means, is there much chance? He doesnt want the exact mathematical probability. But one guy I think around 30 years old answered the thread very well and it WAS a useful thread. I know plenty of guys who ask this question all the time after a mistake like that.

And the other thread, I ask again, how is it political? Economical, yes, political, I disagree. Good thread that wasnt political (yes it had the odd comment, but the vast vast majority was not one bit political) and it hadnt degenerated.

I am not attacking you Diablo, I just think you need to take it easy on some threads, it seems as if you are on a power trip sometimes. I cannot say, in 4 1/2 years of visiting this site, that I have seen a moderator close so many threads off borderline "rules".

haha, 2 reasons for that, there hasnt been any big fights on in ages. Also, the football has started back up, so the champions league, la liga and premier league are keeping me very busy. Oh, and the fact that sometimes I get like no replies to boxing threads. I just leave my boxing discussion for boxingtalk.com these days.

But in all seriousness, I am an economist, so I am interested in economics and I have been in the situation of that guy who posted the condom thread a few times in my life (back when I used to have unprotected sex when I was mute drunk), and finding out the minute probabability of contracting HIV definately eased the burden. If someone just told me, nobody can tell you that, I sure wouldnt have belt much better!

Welcome back bro, I was wondering where you went!

Well I'm here to tell you there is such a magic wand. Something that will make you almost completely irresistible to any woman you "point it" at. Something guaranteed to fill your life with love, romance, and excitement.
