I still don't get deadlifts, even after having people demonstrate to me, and seen the virtual example... Every time i do deadlifts, i never feel it in my back, or i dont even know which part of my back should be feeling it. Every time i do deadlifts, i have to stop because my forearms are hurting, so basically my forearms get a better workout than my back does.. i never know to keep my legs straight or not...I just dont like them ahh

Too bad because they're a great exercise.

Unless you're doing stiff-legged DL's don't keep your legs straight. A lot of the lifting ppower comes from your legs.

Generally speaking, you won't "feel" it any specific place. I know when I get to my heavy ass sets, that my lower back feels a contraction when I get to the top, and squeeze. However, Hopefully your lower/mid back and hamstrings will feel pretty week the rest of the day.

Trust me, continue getting stronger in the deadlift every week, and youll feel it when the weights get heavy. I feel in in my whole body after a deadlift workout. Not just in my lower back.

i feel a lot of pressure in my hip area i guess thats due to my wide stance was doing 210x8...does it really make that much of a difference using wide or normal stance.

You missing out bro if you don't do deads i've had someone come up to me saying they respect me cuz i deadlift so heavy

For squats and deads,

Wide stance - More stress on hips and gluts
More narrow stance - More stress on quads

Wide stance also allows for less travel distance, possibly letting you lift heavy.

It's funny that I just started deadlifting and I have exactly the opposite problem as you Hockey Playa. My back needs to catch up to my legs. I am deadlifting 135 for a set of 12, and my back is barely able to handle that. I feel like my legs could handle another 10 lbs on each side for a set of 12, but I am not about to risk straining a back muscle to push myself right now. I have had people spot me to check my technique, and I am properly executing the lift. My back muscles are just hellaweak.

Keep doing them the way you are until the rest of your body catches up with your back. Maybe you just need to do more weight? If you're up over 200 lbs I'd definitely get some lifting wraps unless you've got some amazing calluses on your hands.

I think you're mislead as to what straps do. They basically aid you in holding on to the bar, in the instance that your grip isn't strong enough. Calluses are just toughened skin, and don't really help your grip strength.

I, personally, refuse to use straps, and prefer a staggered grip when doing my deadlifts. If I get to the point where I feel that my grip is too weak for the weight, I may start.

Straps are nice for 1 rep maxes other then that i would just use gloves for deads

Yar Skilla, never had so much weight on the bar to cause me to lose my grip. My forearms keep up pretty well while lifting. That's the first thing I think of when I think of using gloves and wraps.
Now I know, and knowing's half the battle.

Don't worry about 'feeling' a certain exercise in certain places. Concentrate on good form, and steadily increasing the weight.

As you body adjusts, you'll start to feel the effects on different body parts.

I'd say it's even more important than that, and I can see where your thoughts were going on that. No biggie.

should you use a diamond bar or straight bar for DLs? I use the Diamond Bar.

I'm not sure what a diamond bar is, but I use a regular olympic bar.
