Hey guys,

Its me making another deadlift thread. If you look back into my history, Ive asked alot of questions about deadlifts form and such, and I never really got around to doing them cause they always felt weird. Well this semester, Im in a weight training class, so I thought it would be the perfect time to learn. Unfortuantely my trainer said because we dont have padded weights or the rubber area to do them, I couldnt
them.

Well, I bugged him again today about doing rack pulls instead, and he just said I could do deadlifts as long as Im not doing 300-500 lbs... I laughed at this cause im only 135 lbs. So I asked him to show my the form, and he put on 2 45 lbs plates and showed me how to do them. And I figure my form is decent cause he was watching me... but right now (RIGHT after work out) my lower back is really sore. Is this normal? To be honest, I think 135 is too much for me right now, so next time ill go for 2 35lb weights, but should I expect my lower back to be sore next time? He said my lower back should be completely straight throughout the exercise and my quads should be doing most of the work... is this right?

Thanks alot guys.

well deadlifts work your back, so obviously your lower back will get sore.

btw your trainer is a dumb**** for putting on so much weight for a person who's never even done them before.

OK, thanks... its been a couple of hours, and i dont feel the soreness i was feeling before. I just wanted to make sure that the soreness was from working a muscle and now because of bad form or soemthing. Thanks alot

It's normal to feel like a truck hit your back after a heavy deadlift session, but if you hurt yourself you'll know.. it'll be too painful to be just 'sore'. It hurt like the blazes when I was learning to deadlift and didn't keep my back straight, luckily it was back then when I could only deadlift 40kg (ahem) so the weight wasn't heavy enough to do me any damage, heh..

yeah, deadlifts will make your back sore, i guess because your spinal erectors are working hard to keep your back straight. i know that my back gets sore, but i just see this as something positive. i'm not sure if soreness tells me anything, but it sure tells me that i've been doing something.

OK, so I was doing deadlifts today for real (last time was just trying them out/leanring form) and I had my trainer watch me.

Two things... one, my right knee started to hurt, and he said this could be becasue I was lowering the weight slowly (I didnt want to just drop it because we dont have pads). But as long as I kept my knees kinda pointed inward it didnt hurt my knees. Does anyone else know anything about this?

Second thing is that he said most of the work was being done by the thighs, or the quads, but I dont feel it at all in my legs. I definitely feel it in the lower back, but not the legs... is this normal?

Most work is done by the back when doing deadlifts. My legs are never sore after doing them.

Good bloody god. I do two worksets every two weeks and that's enough for me.

Ummmm, I think some of the sets I actually was shifting my weight to my right knee. Like because I had to lower it so slowly, I think I might have kinda repositioned my knee...and I think this is when I felt the pain. Note to self: never do that again. Thanks for helping me clarify that.

Second thing... so you aren't supposed to lock your knees out when you get to the top of the deadlift position?

What happens, IN HER MIND, is that she comes to see you as WORTHLESS simply because she hasn't had to INVEST anything in you in order to get you or to keep you.

You were an interesting diversion while she had nothing else to do. But now that someone a little more valuable has come along, someone who expects her to treat him very well, she'll have no problem at all dropping you or demoting you to lowly "friendship" status.

Try switching to sumo style (at beginning position calfs should be perpendicular to the floor, arms shoulder width) and see if that helps your knee problem.

While deadlifts DO use alot of your quads, it should never really make them sore, almost all the work is done by your back.

Think of deadlifts as a squat up until the bar comes past the knee, at the point keep your back straight and pull backwards.

Organized: ok, thanks...ill not lock out at the top cause I dont want to mess up my knees. Thanks alot.

Bcherb2: Thanks for the suggestions and then the clarifications on the quad/back. Im gonna keep on trying normal deadlifts making sure I dont shift weight or lock out at top, but if my knees continue to hurt even after this, I will definitley try out sumo style. Thanks.
